1 INTRODUCTION The presence of trees in savannas contributes to their functional distinction from grasslands. Although both grasslands and savannas feature an herbaceous understory where C4 grasses are common, trees in savannas structurally differentiate these systems and influence ecosystem function (Ratnam et al., 2011; Stahlheber et al., 2015; Veldman et al., 2013).
