Late-Life Migration Among Older Chinese: Agency, Structure, and the Limits of Voluntariness
1 Introduction Migration-related mobility is considered an important but neglected factor that can enable older people to improve their quality of life (Ciobanu and Hunter 2017). However, migration in old age can be a significant source of stress for older migrants, who often face challenges related to language, cultural adaptation, social network disruption, and limited access to social support (e.g., Chen and Buckingham 2025a; Pot et al. 2020).
Towards Putonghua-dominated multilingualism? Investigating students’ language attitudes, abilities, use, and preference in a Hokkien-speaking region
ABSTRACT This study investigates the correlation between attitudes, abilities, use and preference of Hokkien, Putonghua and English among secondary school students in a Hokkien-speaking region of Mainland China. This research employs a mixed-methods design involving 586 students for questionnaires and 24 students for other semi-structured interviews. The quantitative results show students hold more positive attitudes towards Putonghua, which dominates in both proficiency and use.
