Mothers’ education and son preference: evidence from China’s compulsory schooling laws
ABSTRACT This paper examines the causal effect of mothers’ education on son preference by exploiting the China’s Compulsory Schooling Laws (CSLs). We find that women with a higher level of education are less likely to have a second child when their first child is a girl and have a lower male ratio in the second parity. Overall, we estimate that the enforcement of the CSLs could save approximately 0.48 million missing women.
Spillover effects of migration: evidence from the mental health of non-left-behind children
This article examines the causal spillover effects of village migration on non-left-behind children’s mental health outcomes. Our results suggest that the proportion of village migration has negative effects on boys’ mental health, while the effects among girls are not significant. This suggests that policies aimed at left-behind children can be extended to all children in rural China, especially the neglected group of non-left-behind children.
