What was your first job as a journalist?
I covered a sporting event of the provincial baseball championship in Havana.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
I used to use a typewriter in my childhood. I remember many times using carbon paper when the ribbon wore out. The experience was unique.
How is social media changing news?
In many ways. But I think there is more immediacy and more variety of sources and media than ever before.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Stephen King.
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It is being a person who is constantly aware of everything around him, seeking to satisfy information needs for society.
What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?
I don't know what to say, but it catches my attention when I see the hashtag
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
I am always open to writing. It is my passion. So any proposal in any way is welcome.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
I usually use my laptop and the baseball apps available, a scorecard app and a notebook. I also travel with my camera for events I need to cover.
What's your favorite social network?
I think it's Substack now. But it used to be X.
Who do you wish followed you?
Any reader who wishes to do so and feels free to choose what to read, without distinction, and who feels satisfied with my work.
Why did you become a journalist?
He had the passion and desire to inform and tell stories.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
We didn't really have anything formal like a newspaper. But I did write some stories about our baseball and kickball games with my friends.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
Of the stories that tell of people's success.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
They should be studious. They should read a lot and inform themselves about all possible topics. They should be grounded in reality and never tire of comparing sources. They should always investigate thoroughly and work immediately.
When's the best time to pitch you?
I write about baseball. And baseball doesn't stop. So I think any time is great.
What's the best pitch you ever got?
When someone recognizes my passion and commitment to my work.
What's the worst pitch you ever got?
That I can't write about what I think.
What's your favorite drink?
I am diabetic, so I drink a lot of water and natural juices.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading a book, watching a series or a movie that I find interesting. I also have an exercise routine with my wife. We do everything together, and we love listening to music while we do any task at home.
Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?
I like to read about sports, fiction, novels, poetry and true stories of self-improvement.
What's the most common misperception about your beat?
I really can't say. It's something that is up to the readers to tell. I write about baseball all the time. And really, my followers and subscribers have been very appreciative of my work covering baseball throughout the year.
