INTRODUCTION The incidence of diabetes increases with age, imposing a substantial health burden. Aging is accompanied by increased insulin resistance and decreased insulin secretion, the two key mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes1-5. Insulin resistance is correlated with increased amounts of visceral fat and ectopic fat in the skeletal muscle and liver6, 7.
