Abstract Soil food webs are critical for maintaining ecosystem functions but are challenged by various stressors including climate change, habitat destruction and pollution. Although complex multitrophic networks can, in theory, buffer environmental stress, the effects of anthropogenic chemicals on soil food webs under climate change remain poorly understood.

Where do we stand today? Soil microbes are the most diverse and abundant organisms on the planet (Anthony et al., 2023) and play critical roles in supporting food production, carbon sequestration, and soil fertility (Bahram et al., 2018). Moreover, plant microbiomes, including those associated with roots and leaves, are also essential for promoting plant resource use efficiency and plant resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses (Meena et al., 2017; de Vries et al., 2020; Li et al., 2024a,b).
