1 Introduction Postcolonial sociology of nationalism locates nation-making in racialised relations with colonial others.1 National self-definition has long drawn on ethno-racial ideas and on the global colonial hierarchy of the ‘West and the rest.’ Within that hierarchy, colonies served as laboratories for core instruments of the modern nation-state, including governmentality and surveillance, which were later exported to the metropole (Bhambra 2023; Valluvan 2019).
