Introduction Heterosis, or hybrid vigour, describes the situation in which hybrid offspring exhibit superior phenotypic performance than that of their parents. Hybrid rice often shows a 10%–20% yield advantage over their corresponding inbred rice cultivars. The exploitation of heterosis has been widely applied in hybrid rice breeding and has achieved remarkable achievements in grain yield.
