Terug naar de krant Het artikel over ijzertekort (14/6) kan makkelijk misverstanden opleveren. Meestal worden de ijzerparameters in bloed gemeten om de oorzaak van bloedarmoede te achterhalen. Er valt inderdaad veel voor te zeggen om daarbij niet al te zwart-wit naar de huidige normaalwaarden te kijken . Het ijs wordt echter heel glad bij de interpretatie van lage of laagnormale ijzerwaarden zonder bloedarmoede. „We weten dat deze patiënten klachten kunnen hebben”, zeggen de geïnterviewden.

Ze zijn eruit: de zorg moet bezuinigen. Dat betekent keuzes maken: in vergoedingen, eigen risico, voorzieningen, personele capaciteit, ga maar door… Wat men makkelijk vergeet is dat het meest valt te halen bij keuzes in de spreekkamer, als patiënt en arts tegenover elkaar zitten. Wat zijn dat eigenlijk voor keuzes? Wat speelt er allemaal aan, maar vooral ónder de oppervlakte? Het lijkt eenvoudig en aan dogma hoe het zou móeten gaan is geen gebrek.
