Coupled watershed and estuary modeling of microplastic transport and retention in the Delaware river basin
Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging environmental concern owing to their widespread presence and ecological impacts. We develop a coupled watershed–estuary modeling framework to simulate MP transport from terrestrial sources to estuarine systems. The Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM) is enhanced to represent point and nonpoint MP sources and is coupled with the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) to capture estuarine transport.

Peat accumulation and soil mechanical support for plant proliferation
Abstract Through an analysis of soil structure and soil mechanics characteristics, combined with the principle of the past informed by modern analogues, the properties of peat and soil are examined. The structure and physical conditions of soil can provide strong mechanical support for plant growth, whereas the loose accumulation layer of peat lacks the soil properties necessary to sustain the long-term prosperity of large plants.
Pressure-induced changes in structure, magnetic order and superconductivity in the ferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi 8 Te 13
Abstract Introducing superconductivity (SC) in an intrinsic magnetic topological system remains a significant challenge in modern condensed matter physics. Here, we show that SC can be induced by applying high pressure to a promising ambient-pressure magnetic topological insulator candidate, MnBi8Te13. Using electrical transport, magnetic susceptibility, and synchrotron x-ray diffraction, we construct a detailed temperature - pressure phase diagram.
Recent Articles-Skeletal Muscle and Other Topics in Diabetes
This commentary summarizes recently published research, giving several important findings. Deficiency of skeletal muscle appears, like excess of visceral fat, to strongly contribute to the development of diabetes. Concerns about GLP-1RA in contributing to low muscle mass may be overstated, with the benefits of the class appearing to outweigh adverse effects; however, approaches to prevention of muscle loss with GLP-1RA and with diabetes itself are important.

To the Editor, There is a high prevalence of iron deficiency among people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) [1]. Though Elexacaftor/Tezacaftor/Ivacaftor (ETI) has shown large improvements in respiratory symptoms in PwCF, including improved percent predicted forced expiratory volume in 1 s (ppFEV1) and decreased rate of exacerbations [2, 3], there has not been abundant research in the effects of ETI on iron status and blood counts in PwCF.
A minimal transcription template-based amplification-free CRISPR-Cas13a strategy for DNA detection
Human adenovirus (HAdV) is a non-enveloped, double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) virus [1] primarily transmitted through the respiratory tract [2]. It is highly contagious and can cause significant outbreaks [3]. The population, particularly children and immunocompromised individuals [4], generally lacks immunity to HAdV, increasing the risk of severe adenoviral pneumonia and potential fatalities [5].
Confinement of Z-scheme organic-inorganic heterojunction into mesoporous zeolite for efficient photocatalytic solar fuel generation
PCR is of great significance in solving energy shortages and environmental pollution by converting CO2 into value-added chemicals (such as CO, CH4, methanol, etc) [1], [2], [3], [4], [5]. Syngas (CO and H2), as one of the main products of PCR, is usually a key raw material for the production of valuable hydrocarbon liquid fuels through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) [6], [7]. However, FTS often needs to be conducted under harsh conditions with high temperatures or pressure.

The discovery and ultrasensitive detection of biomarkers [1], the on-site screening of major infectious pathogens [2], and the timely monitoring of trace harmful substances in food and the environment are important for safeguarding human health [3]. A major limitation to most techniques remains effective sample enrichment for scarce targets and accurate transfer of the target information into a convenient and processable signal for readout [4].
Wave interaction with a floating finite elastic plate of arbitrary shape
Wave interaction with a floating finite elastic plate is considered, based on the linearized velocity potential theory for fluid flow, and the thin elastic plate model for plate deflection. The shape of the plate can be arbitrary, and free edge conditions are imposed at its edge. The solution procedure is established by dividing the domain into two subdomains—one below free surface and the other below the plate.

Phys. Rev. C 109, 044319 (2024) - Coupling of shape and pairing vibrations in a collective Hamiltonian based on nuclear energy density functionals. II. Low-energy excitation spectra of triaxial nuclei
The triaxial quadrupole collective Hamiltonian, based on relativistic energy density functionals, is extended to include a pairing collective coordinate. In addition to triaxial shape vibrations and rotations, the model describes pairing vibrations and the coupling between triaxial shape and pairing degrees of freedom. The parameters of the collective Hamiltonian are determined by a covariant energy density functional with constraints on the intrinsic triaxial shape and pairing deformations.
