Coupled watershed and estuary modeling of microplastic transport and retention in the Delaware river basin
Abstract Microplastics (MPs) are an emerging environmental concern owing to their widespread presence and ecological impacts. We develop a coupled watershed–estuary modeling framework to simulate MP transport from terrestrial sources to estuarine systems. The Distributed Hydrology Soil Vegetation Model (DHSVM) is enhanced to represent point and nonpoint MP sources and is coupled with the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model (FVCOM) to capture estuarine transport.

A pulsar-helium star compact binary system formed by common envelope evolution
Editor’s summary Stars in binary systems can interact, which affects the evolution of both objects. Theory predicts that some binary systems experience a common envelope phase in which one object orbits within the outer layers of its companion, but this has not been directly observed. Yang et al. identified a rapidly spinning pulsar on a close orbit with a companion helium star.

Strong and weak pulsar radio emission due to thunderstorms and raindrops of particles in the magnetosphere - Nature Astronomy
Abstract Pulsars radiate radio signals when they rotate. However, some old pulsars often stop radiating for some periods. The underlying mechanism remains unknown, as the magnetosphere during nulling phases is hard to probe due to the absence of emission measurements. Here we report the detection and accurate polarization measurements of sporadic, weak, narrow dwarf pulses detected in the ordinary nulling state of pulsar B2111+46 via the Five-Hundred-Meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope.

Characterization of the tumor microenvironment in classic Hodgkin lymphoma: determining the deep immunophenotypic signature of T cells using mass cytometry
Classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) is a B-cell malignancy characterized by a rich non-malignant immune infiltrate. Previous efforts to characterize T cell subsets in cHL tumor microenvironment (TME) showed conflicting results. PD-1 inhibitors have provided further insight into the complex interactions of the TME in cHL. Most studies of the TME in cHL relied on flow cytometry and immunohistochemistry, techniques limited in the number of markers that can be analyzed at once.

Multiscale Modeling of Fault Rupture–Soil–Foundation Interaction | Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering | Vol 148, No 12
Abstract A multiscale approach that couples the finite-element method (FEM) and the discrete-element method (DEM) is used to model and analyze the earthquake fault rupture–soil–foundation interaction (FR–SFI) problem. The approach obtains the soil constitutive responses from the DEM solutions of representative volume elements (RVEs) embedded at the FEM integration points, effectively bypassing the phenomenological hypotheses in conventional FEM simulations.

CRISPR-mediated BMP9 ablation promotes liver steatosis via the down-regulation of PPARα expression
Abstract Obesity drives the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) characterized by hepatic steatosis. Several bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) except BMP9 were reported related to metabolic syndrome. This study demonstrates that liver cytokine BMP9 is decreased in the liver and serum of NAFLD model mice and patients. BMP9 knockdown induces lipid accumulation in Hepa 1-6 cells.

l-citrulline prevents asymmetric dimethylarginine-mediated reductions in nitric oxide and nitrosative stress in primary human airway epithelial cells
Asthma is associated with reduced systemic levels of l-arginine and increased asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA). This imbalance leads to nitric oxide synthase (NOS) uncoupling with reduced nitric oxide (NO) formation and greater oxidative and nitrosative stress. Whether this imbalance also occurs in bronchial epitheliumof asthmatics is unknown.
