Aspen Acres Fire containment grows again, fire now 71% contained

Updated Aug. 4, 2026, 2:34 p.m. MT Just over five weeks after the start of the devastating Aspen Acres Fire, the seventh-largest wildfire in Colorado history is more than 70% contained. The fire that has burned 101,961 acres and hundreds of homes and structures in Pueblo and Custer counties is now 71% contained after firefighters achieved another 4% containment between Aug. 3 and Aug. 4. The uncontained 29% of the fire's perimeter is on the southwestern flank.

The area set two daily temperature records in July: 107 on July 26 and 103 on July 27. Cooler temps were in the forecast for Aug. 4, but the thermometer will pass 100 again on Aug. 7-8. Coming off the seventh hottest July in its recorded history, the Pueblo area is off to a blistering hot start in August. Pueblo saw its hottest August day on record Aug.
