CON REPORT: Worldcon 80 - Chicon 8
The 80th World Science Fiction Convention was held from September 1st thru 5th , 2022. This was the 8th ChiCon. It returned to the Hyatt Regency Chicago Hotel and Convention Center where Chicon 7 was held in 2012. It’s a beautiful facility with a maze-like layout that disoriented and confused even the most seasoned convention goer. I quickly regretted not taking one of the many tours offered, but fortunately staff kindly guided lost souls to their destination.

Reviews of Stuff I Forgot the Details of Within 24 Hours of Watching
Steve takes a look at recent films and tv films everyone else seems to like A few years ago I adopted a new rating system for my film reviews: the metric was “How Many Times Steve Fell Asleep While Watching This So-Called Bit of Entertainment”. I’m also a reviewer who is not afraid to admit that I got it wrong during a review. For example, the first Wonder Woman flick was a three-snorer plus a walk-out the first time I saw it.

The Enterprise, not for children under 6; small parts may present a choking hazard; meat, graffiti, ERB sale, Ryk Spoor, Damon Knight and more Netflix’s Cowboy Bebop “not as good as it could have been”.

To smile through any hardship is a commendable virtue for anyone to have. Continuing to do so while having to raise two half-human, half-wolf children is something on a different world of resilience altogether. The story of the Wolf Children Ame And Yuki is about a mother and father who fell in fairy-tale love and their […]
Anime roundup 8/12/2021: You Can't Even Quit the Game
Sonny Boy #4 – Word travels fast around the class about Nagara’s ability, and so everyone expects that he can simply take them home. He can’t, as it turns out, but what he can do is pop some of them momentarily into a dimension where other primates take up baseball and develop their own storied league. Aside from demonstrating that Japan really, really, really likes baseball, this episode does give us our first glimpse into Nagara’s worldview.

NYCC ’15: Marjorie Liu on “Monstress”, Rebuilding Life After Trauma, and The State of Being an Asian American Creator
In the quiet early hours of Saturday in New York Comic-Con’s press lounge, Marjorie Liu and I chatted about her new Image title Monstress with artist Sana Takeda, systemic racism, the expectations places on creators of color, and the intergenerational trauma of war. Known for her Marvel work on X-23 and Daken: Dark Wolverine, Liu is known outside of the comics world as a writer of novels. All art below is by Monstress series artist Sana Takeda.
NYCC ’15: Cliff Chiang On “Paper Girls” - Representation, 80’s Fashion, and the Weirdness of Suburbs
As New York Comic-Con’s show floor slowly shuffled to a close on Friday evening, I slipped behind the Epic Proportions booth to chat with one of my all-time favorite artists, Cliff Chiang. His recent work including DC’s Wonder Woman, Vertigo’s Beware The Creeper, and the first issue of hopefully many of Paper Girls with Brian K. Vaughan, Matt Wilson, and Jared K. Fletcher at Image Comics.
Back This: ‘Moonshot’ - The Indigenous Comics Collection from Alternative History
Kickstarter has been the way for me to find new comic projects and boy am I glad to have come across this project. Moonshot from Alternative History Comics and edited by Hope Nicholson, is a 200 page collection of short stories from Indigenous creators across North America showcasing the rich heritage and identity of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis storytelling.
An Open Letter to Pat Broderick: On Cosplay, Entitlement, and Gatekeeping
In October, comics veteran Patrick Broderick announced that after 20 years – he was returning to DC for an unnamed project.
‘Henshin’ - A Series of Transformative Shorts from Niimura Coming in January
CHANGE IS THE CONSTANT IN KEN NIIMURA’S HENSHIN - A short story collection exploring life in modern Tokyo. I feel like everybody has days that are just so important to them that can always be recalled; the feelings and emotions crashing back through as strong as ever. For me, one of these days is when I first read I Kill Giants by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura – I can easily remember exactly where I was, who was with me, and how I felt during it. So this is super-exciting for me.
Black Friday ’14: Presents for Younger Cousins (And Other Such Family Members)
If you’re like me, you don’t have any siblings, which is a real shame since I really want to get kids into comics. Thankfully, I have enough younger cousins who are easily susceptible to the gift of comics no matter the occasion, so I spoil them rotten at pretty much every turn. I hope they actually like them.
Hickman & Bodenheim Bring ‘The Dying And The Dead’ To Image Surprising No One
“The last story of the Greatest Generation” Don’t let the semi-snarky headline fool you – I love me some Hickman Madness. Secret with artist Bodenheim was one of my favorite short series releases of the past two years and I adore both Manhattan Projects and East of West. Beyond his actual work, what really excites me is that Hickman seems to be utilizing Image’s platform in a way (or at least at a rate) that I wasn’t expecting. I shouldn’t be surprised though; he’s been doing it from day one.
Albert Monteys Shoots for the Stars with Universe! #1 at Panel Syndicate
Well, this is a wonderful surprise! Panel Syndicate announced today that a new digital comic by Albert Monteys (of El Jueves fame) is being hosted on their platform. Panel Syndicate, launched by Brian K. Vaughan and Marcos Martin with the purpose of hosting their spectacular 10-issue series The Private Eye with colorist Muntsa Vicente, is holding true to their word and opening up the publishing platform up to other creators.
Raucous & Ludicrous, ‘Bitch Planet #1′ Is A Exploit Of Contemplative Conflict [Advanced Review]
Let’s get this out of the way first – I loved the hell out of this book. It’s ridiculous while grounded, thoughtful while crazed, exploiting while humanizing; everything I knew to be excited about when DeConnick first announced the book at Image Expo this past January. What excited me most about this book was DeConnick’s personal feelings on the subject; how her love of ’60s and ’70s exploitation and of women in prison films is something that excites her as makes her uncomfortable.
