1 INTRODUCTION Winter thunderstorms are rare in Central Europe and some other parts of the world such as China. They are so rare and were regarded as a bad omen that it was required to be written in records in official chronicles of Ancient China whenever they occurred (Wang, 1980). Although they are usually not related to significant damages as compared to summer thunderstorms, from a meteorological point of view they are an interesting phenomenon worth investigating.
