1 Introduction Approximately 70%–90% of global marine organic carbon is buried in estuaries and associated shelf deposits (Burdige, 2005; Smith et al., 2015), playing a critical role in the global carbon cycle. The burial rate of terrestrial organic carbon in these areas is estimated at 58 ± 17 Tg C yr−1 (Burdige, 2007), making them the second-largest sink of atmospheric CO2 after silicate weathering (Gaillardet et al., 1999; Hage et al., 2022).
