Preparation and characterization of the quaternary hydrophobically associating polymer HATP for tight oil fracturing fluids

Abstract A new polymer thickener HATP was designed to overcome the limitations of guar gum and conventional polyacrylamides in tight oil reservoir fracturing. HATP (P(AM–co–AMPS–co–NVP–co–AHM)) was prepared via micellar copolymerization–redox initiation. It has a composition of 68.8:22.1:7.1:2.0, molecular weight 7.90 × 106 g·mol−1, and thermal decomposition onset at 322 °C.
