With the concept set in place, Chiarella balances shocking set pieces of violence and confusion as the characters, and the viewers, have to constantly question whether the Ryan or Naim on screen is real or just a monster wearing their visage. It adds a thrilling, and occasionally melancholy, tension to every moment of Naim and Ryan onscreen together.

For Clint, Roger's now-grown son, his dad really was that genius, but he's spent most of his life unsure if that genius was in tracking, and finding, Bigfoot, or just convincing the world he had. Roger is long dead, and he went to his grave swearing that the footage was real, but he had a very real financial reason to do so; for Clint, even doubting that the footage might not be real is enough for his mother to disown him from the family.

Cartoony illustrations showed fat, humanoid creatures, strange hybrids of E.T. and mermaids. The reality was far more mundane; Sea monkeys are brine shrimp, engineered to live longer than the standard couple of days the species is known for.
