Why I Leaned Into Three Dollar Pistol Music Instead of Chasing More Deals Pt. 2
Crazy thing since writing last week’s post is that I remembered a few more record deals that almost went down before signing with URBnet for Career Crooks’ “Good Luck With That” and then POW Records for “Future Former Rapper” (shouts to Jeff Weiss and the crew!). My first brush with a potential deal was around 2001-2002. I was only rapping for maybe 4-5 years.
Why I Leaned Into Three Dollar Pistol Music Instead of Chasing More Deals Pt. 1
Back in 2010, I deliberately decided to kill off my old record label/crew and start something from the ground up. Totally dolo. Castro was on board as the only defector from the previous camp. I chose the name “Three Dollar Pistol” in 2011 as a play on Tom Waits’ line from “Jockey Full of Bourbon” and the Black Keys song “Ten Cent Pistol”.

By the end of 1961’s "The Hustler", Fast Eddie Felsen has reached the phase Disco Vietnam and Zilla Rocca are in now. Falling in love with pool or rapping or making beats begins with hungrily learning the fundamentals. Most spend years finding the standard and meeting it. Once you arrive and leap over it you get to where Paul Newman’s character is as the movie starts: the search for more power, the inescapable temptation to flex on people who can’t hang with you.
Easy Street Mixtape, by Zilla Rocca
Before the album "FAST EDDIE" drops, we have the "Easy Street Mixtape"! This is Zilla Rocca's third official mixtape, starting with 2008's "Bring Me the Head of Zilla Rocca" and 2013's "Neo Noir". But it's 2025 so why the hell is this mixtape here? Well, something is missing when the communal hot beats all rappers and DJs would get busy on have been mothballed for the ongoing inventory of brand spanking new projects dropping on a weekly basis.
The Best of Def Jux
The genius of Definitive Jux can be traced to an idea stolen from Ghostfaces song "The Grain," off 2000’s Supreme Clientele. Overtop a beloved breakbeat, Ghost and RZA forbid rappers from going against the grain of classic hip-hop tenets—while making a thoroughly surreal, topsy turvy masterpiece that went against the grain of classic hip-hop tenets.
Don't Wait For Me to Leave, by Zilla Rocca & andrew
Coming off his breakout LPs "POP 1967" and "The Rain Knows What It's Doing", andrew seemed an unlikely production partner for Zilla Rocca's bourbon drenched punchlines and late '90s east coast rap lineage. But that's the thing about chemistry: you can't explain it. You just know when it works. Every beat andrew sent over became a song. Every song Zilla wrote referencing the touchstones of Italian heritage South Philly residents know too well built a new brotherhood.

Midnight Sons | Zilla Rocca & Chong Wizard | Chong Wizard
Loosely inspired by the occult Marvel supergroup of the same name, "Midnight Sons" from Philadelphia's Zilla Rocca (Wrecking Crew) and Vancouver's DJ Chong Wizard is a cryptic and poignant look at the modern hellscape of modern society no comic book writer could ever predict.

96 Mentality, by Zilla Rocca
1996 is my favorite year in rap. It's one of the last years when I was just a fan of the music and not spending time and money contributing to it/obsessing over it/fine tuning my approach to it. 96 Mentality is the fastest album I've ever made. Most of the songs are under 3 minutes. I wanted to capture the joy of rhyming over east coast beats as quickly as possible. There's some concept songs and guest appearances by venerable homies who bust my ass on this record.
How Underground Rap Legend Blueprint Expanded Into Real Estate, Podcasting, and the Film World
Blueprint has been one of the most industrious artists in independent hip hop for over two decades. He has been signed to Rhymesayers—a label built off sweat equity, relentless touring, face time with fans, and consistent Billboard rewards. He has released closed to fifty projects on his own label, Weightless Recordings, since 1999. Blueprint is also a perpetual craftsman, dedicating years of his life to master skills well beyond the reach of normal touring rappers with devoted fans.
"Talent Is Talent And Business Is Business": An Interview With Wu-Tang Clan's Masta Killa
Being a member of the most influential rap group of the past twenty years is like holding a passport for access to whatever interests you have: Acting suits Method Man, GZA has given lectures at MIT, and RZA has worked in Hollywood and cosigned Chipotle for a new ad campaign.
The Best of Def Jux - The Dowsers
The genius of Definitive Jux can be traced to an idea stolen from Ghostface’s song “The Grain,” off 2000’s Supreme Clientele. Overtop a beloved breakbeat, Ghost and RZA forbid rappers from going against the grain of classic hip-hop tenets—while making a thoroughly surreal, topsy turvy masterpiece that went against the grain of classic hip-hop tenets.
“Psychiatry is just this year’s candy pink stove”: Remembering ‘Mad Men’
There’s never been a show I re-watched more than Mad Men. What do women want? One minute you’re on top of the world and the next minute some secretary’s running you over with a lawn mower. You know what happiness is? It’s the moment before you need more happiness! We drink because it’s what men do. How do you sleep at night? I’ve read Sterling’s Gold. Johnny Walker, Bulleit bourbon, and Old Fashions were the bottles and cocktails that were tapped at my wedding first.
Rest in Peace, Prodigy
Prodigy was the most fearless great rapper ever. He threatened to have the entire state of New York aim guns at 2Pac on “Drop a Gem on Em.” He bucked at Jay-Z at the height of the Roc. He wrote a book in jail that flayed most of his rapper friends. He appeared on Alex Jones’ paranoia outlet. He dropped a brick on G-Unit. He went through more drama than the Baldwins. He got punched in the face by Keith Murray. He was bumrushed by Tru Life.
Teddy Riley and New Jack Swing: An Oral History
Today, rap is a ubiquitous part of any playlist, popping up in seemingly every subgenre of music that exists, but this has not always been the case. Flashback to the mid-’80s, when rap was beginning to reach a larger mass audience thanks to groups like Run-DMC and LL Cool J. While the earlier iterations of the art form were as silly and loose as they were funky, the genre still was considered a predominantly “street” expression.
The 15 Best Kendrick Lamar Verses, Ranked
Kendrick Lamar is his generation’s greatest rapper (sorry, Drake!). The Compton MC blends searing socio-political themes with acrobatic flows for a style that’s both visceral and cerebral. It’s a neat trick, and one that he’s refined over the past 10 years, culminating in 2017’s DAMN. Here, we collect his 15 best verses from the last decade. “Rigamortus” was the moment when K Dot got dap from the hip hop traditionalists.
Why Visionary Art Is Everywhere at Electronic Festivals
Last year, at an electronic music festival in the woods, a 20-something man in an STS9 t-shirt attempted to describe the experience he had had the night before. The task was proving more difficult than anticipated, as the night before, he’d roamed the festival on acid. He gesticulated emphatically, talking about swirling colors, breathing trees, layers of light, and cosmic harmony.
