1 Introduction The main purpose of irrigation is to mitigate crop water stress and improve crop yields. At the global scale, c.a. 40% of crop production takes place on irrigated land, which however only accounts for c.a. 20% of the global farmland (Puy et al., 2021). Agriculture is also the largest freshwater consumer and accounts for 70% of global freshwater withdrawals and irrigation has also been the majority of agricultural water use worldwide (UnitedNations, 2012).
