Westfield's Eric Shilyuk battles leukemia with positivity, community support

Westfield's Eric Shilyuk battles leukemia with positivity, community support

MassLive — Eric Shilyuk's smile has become a part of the Westfield boys volleyball team's routine. Make a clean pass to Shilyuk, have him send a perfectly arcing set to one of the team's powerful front-row players, hear the thud of a kill as it crashes into the ground and watch Shilyuk beam with joy. Or, in the rare instance that the point doesn't go Westfield's way, look for a grin filled with encouragement and support - an expression that eases you into believing the Bombers will pick up the next one. This is the way Shilyuk operates.

MassLive — SPRINGFIELD - A couple of months back, Putnam's Justin Stewart made his way to the coach William Shepard's office. The senior guard, who had come back from an early-season injury, explained to his coach that he thought he deserved more playing time. "I said, 'Justin, you've got to show us that you deserve more playing time,'" Shepard recalled. Tuesday evening, with the Division I state tournament as his stage, Stewart showed off just how far he has come since that meeting, picking up significant playing time while displaying his improved defensive ability.

MassLive — WORCESTER - With 25.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter Saturday evening, Putnam boys basketball senior captain Ty Nichols embraced co-captain Jon Garcia. Catholic Memorial had pushed out to a nine-point lead, and, after spending the bulk of the second half attempting to generate Putnam's offense through his defensive pressure, Garcia had fouled out. "We already made history," Nichols told Garcia before he walked off the court. "Relish the moments we had, look back on everything we've done, you've done positive. That's what I told him. I love him."

Becoming that 'BU Guy': How David Quinn became coach - The Daily Free Press

dailyfreepress.com — After five seasons of coaching the Boston University men's hockey team, Jack Parker won his first NCAA championship in a bout against Boston College. The year was 1978, and, in what would become a 40-year tenure as one of the most successful collegiate hockey coaches of all time, Parker had just given BU a look into the future. Little did Parker know that, as he worked toward his first national title, a part of his future sat just 12 rows behind the BU bench and had just made the decision to ditch his local Friars of Providence College to become a fan of the Terriers.

Women's Frozen Four 2013: Minnesota creates history after 'impossible' season

www.sbnation.com — MINNEAPOLIS - Before Sunday's NCAA championship game, University of Minnesota coach Brad Frost gathered his team into a huddle like he would for any other game. This time, however, he had his players close their eyes, and, for three seconds, he let them imagine the end goal - tossing their gloves into the air, piling on top of each other and making history. Then, he told them to stop thinking about it. "Now here's the thing that we have to do," Frost said, as he relayed the Gopher's pregame routine to reporters after the contest.

Women's Frozen Four 2013: BU's Poulin, Kohanchuk thriving year after injury

www.sbnation.com — MINNEAPOLIS - When the No. 2 Boston University women's hockey team scored just 13 seconds into its NCAA semifinal game against Mercyhurst University Friday evening, the goal represented more than just an early lead. As junior co-captain Marie-Philip Poulin made a no-look pass over to senior forward Jenelle Kohanchuk, the duo created a glimpse at something the Terriers did not have for the majority of last season -- two of their best players.

dailyfreepress.com — MINNEAPOLIS - After situating themselves in a room full of reporters after the NCAA title game on Sunday, Boston University women's hockey captains Marie-Philip Poulin and Jill Cardella let their emotions show. With her face red, Poulin dabbed at her eyes and took a deep breath. Cardella, who just played her last game in a Terrier uniform, bit her bottom lip. For the second time in three years, these two players were on the losing end of a national championship game. This time around, the loss came to an undefeated University of Minnesota - the first women's hockey team in NCAA history to go undefeated in a season.

dailyfreepress.com — MINNEAPOLIS - Minutes into the No. 2 Boston University women's hockey team's game against the undefeated and top-ranked University of Minnesota, junior forward Marie-Philip Poulin fell to the ground. The co-captain and team leader in points had taken a puck to the kneecap after she tried to block a shot by Minnesota defenseman Megan Bozek. For several seconds, while play continued to whirl around her, Poulin attempted to push herself up off the ice to no avail. Finally, the whistle blew. BU's trainer rushed out onto the ice and crouched down over Poulin who continued to writhe in pain and struggle to get up.

Stony Brook ready for CWS debut

Stony Brook ready for CWS debut

web.sny.tv — After defeating LSU in the deciding game of the Baton Rouge super regional on Sunday, the Stony Brook University baseball team became the first America East squad ever to advance to the College World Series. "There were just so many different emotions that were going through my body and my mind," said Stony Brook coach Matt Senk. "I just think that if I had to sum it up in one word, it was just euphoria. To see what we had accomplished and guys all running out to the dogpile, it was just an absolutely euphoric moment." Yet accomplishing this feat within its conference is not the main reason why Stony Brook has acquired so much attention. Rather, it was a different first that propelled this team into the spotlight -- the first time many people had heard of the Seawolves.

Despite negative feedback, several Mets remain on Twitter

Despite negative feedback, several Mets remain on Twitter

metsblog.com — As the Mets continue to struggle, the team has come under an unsurprising amount of scrutiny. Their bullpen sits near the basement of the Major Leagues, their offense is, at the most inconvenient times, light and there appears to be no cure in the near future. In a city like New York, these challenges do not - by any means - fall under the radar. The players hear about their shortcomings on a daily basis, be it from various media outlets or from the fans when the players step up to the plate.

Ignoring the stereotype: women as sideline reporters

Ignoring the stereotype: women as sideline reporters

Boston Globe — Just about every job has a stereotype associated with it - that picture we create in our heads as small children that we try to alter as we grow older. Many of these images we create and foster involve the gender of those in the occupation. People think firefighter and they imagine it being a man's job. Meanwhile, many people associate being a nurse or a teacher with being a woman. We know that these stereotypes are wrong, but we still grow up believing them. Out of all of those generalities, however specific they are to the gender of a person, very few have to do with the actual appearance of the person.
