The Power of a Compliment: Deflating Autopilot

The Power of a Compliment: Deflating Autopilot

Huffington Post — Many of us live on a default setting running like clockwork. There are chunks of our adult lives that we allow to stream along on autopilot. Wake up. Check email. Shower. Grab a bite if possible. Get the kids ready for school. Make breakfast. Get the kids on the bus. Sit in traffic. Become annoyed. Scream at strangers. Make it to work late. Work. Sit in traffic again. Stop by Target to buy one item. The line is long. Why won't they call another cashier up? Toddlers scream. It's crabby hour. Feel annoyed again. Waste $100.00 on items we don't need.

Post It Notes In School: How One Group Of Girls Did Something Extraordinary

chicagonow.com — Today I am so proud to share this amazing movement of kindness amongst 6th-8th girls at Woodlawn Middle School in Buffalo Grove. The girls decided to start writing positive messages of encouragement on post it notes which they stuck on the mirrors of the washrooms in the school. They left markers and post it notes for other girls, and by the end of the day, the concept quickly caught on, with over 200 messages. The messages consisted of encouragement, beauty, inner strength and love. I am so proud to be part of this community.

Buffalo Grove Park District Asks Parents To Chill Out

chicagonow.com — Emmerich Park in Buffalo Grove has a new sign up addressing parents' behavior during sports games. Mike Terson, who is the Buffalo Grove park district's public relations and marketing manager, came up with the idea for the signs after noticing inappropriate or hot-headed behavior by parents at some of his own son's games. These signs are a great reminder for all parents that kids need to be kids, have fun, and enjoy the game for what it is, a game. Directly from the sign ( courtesy of NBC): "Of the hundreds of thousands of children who have ever played youth sports in Buffalo Grove, very few have gone on to play professionally.

However, for a teacher or a professor, a quiet classroom filled with learning can quickly lead to the top news story within minutes, a job lost, or a world turned upside down.

From the Classroom to the Boardroom: We are Losing Effective Teachers

LinkedIn — In 2012, I learned how to design websites and studied SEO. I created an online education magazine in order to share the amazing stories we don't hear about in our classrooms and throughout higher education. I am honored to share articles from leading superintendents, principals, professors and teachers.I continue to share these articles. However, the voices I hear now are changing rapidly, and they are loud. From the US, over 30,000 people visit my site per month for one single article-Alternatives to Teaching. These educators are looking for guidance and strategies to exit the field. I inter

5 Reasons Why Your Company Should Recruit Teachers

5 Reasons Why Your Company Should Recruit Teachers

LinkedIn — Teachers make up an impressively large talent pool - just doing a simple search on LinkedIn shows that there over 4 million people whose professional title is "teacher." They also represent an impressively under-recruited group of job seekers. Many of them are searching for new opportunities in the corporate world, non-profits and startups. However, quite often companies ignore them because their skills don't seem like an immediate fit. In fact, I believe that now is a great time for companies like yours to consider recruiting teachers, as their skills are transferable to many settings.

An Unexpected Journey: How LinkedIn Changed My Life In One Year [SLIDESHOW]

blog.linkedin.com — I am a teacher at heart. In 2006, I was asked to develop and launch the first graduate advising program for National Louis University. I created a successful program, enrollment blossomed and I was part of an amazing community of educators. Unfortunately, higher education is currently facing challenging times. Last year, I had to make a decision to move forward due to a vast restructure within the institution. I stepped outside of my comfort zone and started on a new path. In June 2011, I became very active on LinkedIn. I originally set my sight on landing a new position, but I found much more.

www.ednewsdaily.com — Written By: Robyn Shulman "My teacher asked me what I want to be when I grow up, I said happy. She told me I don't understand the assignment, I told her she doesn't understand life. -John Lennon How do you define success? Success is based on our own perception and how we see ourselves relevant to the world around us. Success is measured by comparison of our friends, family and colleagues. We even compare ourselves to people we have never met, or via magazine covers filled with airbrushed pictures.

You Are Not Special: A Small Dose Of Reality | ED News Daily

www.ednewsdaily.com — David McCullough Jr., a longtime English teacher of Wellesely High School, presented a live reality check speech to the graduates entitled "You Are Not Special". He states: "Across the country no fewer than 3.2 million seniors are graduating about now from more than 37,000 high schools. That's 37,000 valedictorians... 37,000 class presidents... 92,000 harmonizing altos... 340,000 swaggering jocks... 2,185,967 pairs of Uggs. But why limit ourselves to high school? After all, you're leaving it. So think about this: even if you're one in a million, on a planet of 6.8 billion that means there are nearly 7,000 people just like you."
