Hey, so I've recently discovered biggerpockets. My financial situation is pretty unusual. I have a good credit score, family members with some money, $200,000 in stocks, bonds, and crypto, and i've started saving between half and two thirds of my income (which i can do because i live with my mom for free). On the other hand, my income's extremely low ($25,000 a year maybe).

Hi everyone, young inexperienced guy looking to break into real estate investing. I live and work in the Boston area and I am looking to move out of my parents place within the coming year. I wanted to get your thoughts on “House Hacking” and buying a property that will not cash flow (even after I move out). My plan is to skip the renting phase by living at home and jump right into the owning phase. Here is my plan.

General: Do you rent or own the home you currently live in?

It makes economic sense in a few high-priced areas to rent rather than own, but in places like where I live, it's definitely cheaper to own. It makes even more economic sense to own as modestly as possible, unless you're working a live-in flip, in which case you accept living in a construction zone. In our case, we're moving out of a $150,000 condo in an upscale suburban neighborhood to a duplex we bought for $45,000 in an urban C-neighborhood. We'll be renting out the other half of the duplex.
