The pigment is also used in dyes, lacquer, and a range of economically and culturally important applications. However, the source of the pigment remains a mystery. Vaishally et al. sequenced the genomes of the lac insect and its two symbionts: the bacterium Wolbachia and a yeast-like symbiont.
