INTRODUCTION Postpartum hemorrhage (PPH), defined as blood loss of more than 500 mL, can manifest early within the first 24 h after delivery or late up to 6 weeks postpartum. It is a life-threatening complication and represents the leading cause of maternal mortality worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, about 14 million women experience PPH every year and this leads to about 70 000 annual global maternal deaths.
