Jeffrey Deceder’s wife was barely speaking to him after a three-month stint positively immersed in his newest venture. Not flipping a house or revamping his stock portfolio. Deceder, a lifelong performer with Disney and the Orlando Magic on his resume, decided he’d become the master of ceremonies for a local … turtle race. It started while sitting with his wife and son, Rycker, as they watched YouTube videos. It’s a favorite pastime for the 8-year-old, who has Down syndrome and is autistic.

Maybe Flag Day doesn’t match the festivity levels of Thanksgiving or even July Fourth, but it is a Pittsburgh-area original. Collier is the undisputed home of Flag Day, since William T. Kerr lobbied for the holiday and settled in Collier’s Rennerdale neighborhood. His efforts began in the late 1800s, and, by 1916, he brought this cause all the way to President Woodrow Wilson’s attention.

But those planned comments became moot the moment he stepped onto the patio where the event’s reception was underway. “Sue, what are you doing here?,” he asked a woman he’s known for the better part of his life, his late-mother’s best friend and his childhood neighbor, Susan (Sue) Rudzki.
