‘Pam and Tommy’ Miniseries Controversy
A new show is creating controversy, but what good show doesn’t? Pam and Tommy is a new miniseries that showcases the whirlwind romance between actress Pamela Anderson (played by Lily James) and the Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee (played by Sebastian Stan). The series goes into detail about the infamous unauthorized sex tape scandal that was made public at the time. The show is also starring Nick Offerman, Seth Rogen and Taylor Schilling.
Super Bowl 56 hosts Rams vs. Bengals
Next weekend calls for the most beautiful time of year. No, not Valentine’s day, the Super Bowl duh! The 56th Super Bowl will be taking place on February 13th, 2022 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. This year’s match will be between the Los Angeles Rams and the Cincinnati Bengals which will be the first time these two teams have actually ever met in a championship game. This will also be the Bengals’ first Super Bowl appearance since 1988 when they met and lost to the 49ers.
Wordle Sold to New York Times
What started out as a fun little game turned into a source of income for this software engineer. The New York Times has bought Wordle. The Times, which announced the purchase of the game on Monday, is adding this word game to their stack of digital games. The company is on the quest to increase digital subscriptions to 10 million by 2025. The sudden hit, Wordle, is a daily word game where players get 6 chances to guess a 5-letter word. With each guess the letters get highlighted a different color.
The 2022 Winter Olympics Have Begun
The 2022 Winter Olympics have officially kicked off in Beijing. The Opening Ceremonies took place on Friday February 4th with a beautiful show with the theme of “Together for a Shared Future”. Beijing is the first city in history to host both a Summer and a Winter Olympics. The Opening Ceremonies were held at the National Stadium, also known as the Bird’s Nest, which was originally build for the 2008 Summer Olympics.
Lunar New Year in Vancouver
Chinese New Year is officially upon us. February 1st, 2022, marks the start of a new lunar year and the celebrations last for more than two weeks. This year, 2022, is the year of the tiger. The last year of the tiger was 2010. There are 12 different animals, each of them are associated with positive and negative characteristics. Artists Removed Their Music from Spotify
You may notice some iconic songs missing from your playlists. A number of notable artists have removed their music off of the major streaming platform, Spotify. Spotify has been in the throes of controversy since the famous artist Neil Young forced the country’s largest streaming service to choose between him and the popular podcast host, Joe Rogan. Joe Rogan has a $100 million contract deal with Spotify who has exclusive rights to his show, “The Joe Rogan Experience”.
12th Annual Hot Chocolate Festival
Do you need an excuse to devour some delicious cocoa? Look no further! The Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival is a local excuse for all to treat themselves to mugs of gourmet hot chocolate. 2022 is the 12th anniversary for the festival and the dates are January 15th to February 14th. Although it is not a traditional festival due to COVID-19, there are 44 venues participating. Each one of these locations offers an exclusive selection of hot cocoa creations.

Netflix Confirms Season Two Renewal of Squid Game
Everyone’s favourite Korean Netflix show has been granted a second season. That’s right, “Squid Game” will be back again to give us another season of violent and horrific entertainment. The first season of the show premiered in September 2021 and became an immediate global sensation. Soon after the show released, it was the top-viewed series in 94 countries and is officially the most watched show on Netflix.
#BettyWhiteChallenge Raises Donations in Her Honour
January 17th of this year would have been Betty White’s 100th birthday. In honour of the legend Betty White – a long time animal lover and advocate for animal welfare, a viral trend encourages fans to donate to animal shelters and rescue operations in her name. By using the hashtag #BettyWhiteChallenge, word spread all over social media. Betty, sadly passed on December 31st, 2021, at the age of 99, had a career in the television and film industry that spanned over 60 years.
Countdown to the 2022 Winter Olympics
Start counting down the days, the 2022 Winter Olympics are right around the corner. With the surge of covid-19 cases and the contagious omicron variant, concerns have come up on whether or not the 2022 Winter Olympics will actually happen. As of right now, the intention is that they will indeed occur, although there is still quite a bit of uncertainty. This year’s Winter Olympics are taking place in Beijing, China and are scheduled to officially begin on February 4th and close on February 20th.
‘Bat Out of Hell’ Singer Dies at 74
We say goodbye to yet another musical legend. Meat Loaf, the well-known and beloved rock star has sadly passed away at the age of 74 on January 20th, 2022. There are currently no details released on how he died, but we do know we struggled with several health issues in the last several years. Michael Lee Aday, more well known as Meat Loaf, was born in Dallas, Texas and had a killer rock music career that lasted over six decades.
A New Leader in Jeopardy!
If you’re a fan of the show “Jeopardy!”, you may have heard of the name Ken Jennings, who currently holds the longest consecutive winning streak on the show. Well, there is a new sheriff in town and her name is Amy Schneider. On Friday, she continued her climb up the leaderboard and tied Matt Amodio who held the second-place record for consecutive wins. She now holds 38 consecutive wins and $1,307,200. Not only does Ken Jennings hold the longest streak but he is the current host of the game show.
Super Bowl 56 Announces Halftime Show Lineup
I’ll be honest, I’m not a big football fan. I don’t pay much attention during the season, I don’t know many of the teams, the stats or even player’s names but each year when the Super Bowl comes around, I’m always watching. My family is much more of a hockey family but regardless every February we all get together, cook up some good food, pour up some drinks and watch the game. I think it’s just become a bit of a happy family tradition that we don’t want to break.

A New Queen of BC Pop
This local star is making big moves in the BC music scene and her name is Alexis Lynn. She is native to Surrey, British Columbia and describes her style as sweet pop with a honeyed vocal tone and a little edge underneath. Ever since she was a kid, she knew she was destined to be a singer. She took up song writing as a teenager, and it just clicked. Alexis always found writing came quite easy and naturally to her.
A Band Name You Won’t Forget
A band with a name you won’t forget. The New Pornographers are a Canadian indie/alternative rock group based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. They musical collective formed in 1997 and consists of eight singer-songwriters and musicians. Allan Carl Newman, also known as A.C. Newman was a member of multiple indie rock bands in the 90s, and after those bands broke up, he became the leader of The New Pornographers.
The Zolas: Live in Vancouver
Are you a fan of local indie/alternative rock and looking for some new recommendations, well look no further. The Zolas are playing a show at the Vogue Theatre in Vancouver this Friday, Nov. 27th. The Zolas are based in Vancouver and consist of five members, but the core of the group is the duo of Zachary Gray on vocals and guitar and Tom Dobrzanski on piano. Both of which were originally part of the band Lotus Child and then moved on to form The Zolas in 2009.
The Cool Kids of The Kastle
“Musical ADHD” is what this band likes to describe themselves. Sleepy Gonzales is an eclectic indie rock group from Surrey, British Columbia. The collective is made up of twin brothers Cristian, who is on guitar and vocals, and Benji who is on drums and vocals. Added to the mix is their bass guitarist and punk enthusiast Nick who brings a little edge to the bands style. And lastly, Ally, the front person of the group. She’s got an incredible range and versatility with strong hook-filled melodies.
The Hidden Artists of BC
A few years back, I spent two years living down in Nashville, Tennessee. Now if you know anything about this lovely little city, then you know its nick-named Music City for a reason. While I was there, I attended a literal music school. No sad, no bad days for this artist, Khalil Tatem or as most of his audience know him as KILLY. BC to Treat Shared Residences as 'Family Units,' Enact Stricter Guest Policies — The Heights
Boston College released a letter on Monday providing updates on how the University is preparing for instruction and housing in the fall. The letter said the University will treat students who are living in shared rooms, apartments, or suites as “family units”—it will not require them to wear masks in their shared living spaces, but it will encourage them to physically distance from the other occupants as much as possible.
BC Drops SAT, ACT Requirement for Upcoming Year — The Heights
Boston College has announced that it will be test optional for Class of 2025 applicants in the upcoming admissions cycle on account of concerns that the COVID-19 pandemic will prevent students from taking standardized tests in the fall. The Office of Undergraduate Admission staff will not penalize students who do not submit SAT or ACT scores, and they will look at scores that are submitted as one component in a “holistic” application review, according to the new policy.

By the time high school senior Alex Park found out he had been accepted into Boston College, it was too late for him to visit campus. The Office of Undergraduate Admission announced on March 11—the same day BC announced it was moving courses online—that it was suspending all campus visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But BC’s Regular Decision applicants didn’t receive their decisions until March 19.
BC Students Share Experiences With Testing Positive for COVID-19 — The Heights
By the time Boston College began its first day of online learning on March 19, most students had left campus, and several of the University’s normal operations had ceased on account of the COVID-19 pandemic. The libraries had closed, sports competitions had been canceled, and in-person Masses had been suspended. But two students found themselves taking a trip to one place on campus that remained open—University Health Services (UHS)—to get tested for the novel coronavirus.
PILF Brings BC Law Community Together for Days of Service — The Heights
The Boston College Law School’s Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) hosted a Day of Service on Sept. 7 that brought together faculty, staff, and students to celebrate the new school year. Suffolk County District Attorney Rachael Rollins announced at a Monday morning press conference the indictment of Inyoung You, MCAS ’20, for involuntary manslaughter. You is being charged in connection with the suicide of her boyfriend Alexander Urtula, BC ’19. You was tracking Urtula’s location on her phone on the day of his suicide, and she was present when he jumped to his death in Roxbury. He died on May 20, hours before he was set to cross the stage at Commencement.
BC Sees Higher Sex Offense Reports Than Peer Schools — The Heights
Twice as many rapes and four times as many fondlings per student were reported at Boston College than at the average of its competitor schools in 2018, according to data from campus safety reports. The numbers were released in accordance with the Clery Act, which requires colleges and universities receiving federal funding to publish campus crime statistics yearly by Oct. 1.
University to Study Jesuit Commitment — The Heights
Boston College has begun a self-study as part of an initiative by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU), which has asked the 27 Jesuit colleges and universities across the country to assess their commitment to Jesuit traditions and values as part of the Jesuit Mission Priority Examen. Lynch School Offering Two New Online Master's Programs — The Heights
The Lynch School of Education and Human Development launched its first two online degree programs in January—a master’s program in educational leadership and policy and another in global perspectives: teaching, curriculum and learning environments. Both programs consist of 10 three-credit courses, which most students will complete within two years. Students can begin the programs in the fall, spring, or summer semesters.
Title IX Lawsuit Could Reshape Sexual Assault Investigations — The Heights
A recent lawsuit alleging that Boston College violated a student’s fair process rights could force colleges and universities across New England to reevaluate how they investigate accusations of sexual assault. In late August, federal Judge Douglas P. Woodlock ordered the University to allow a student-athlete—identified as “John Doe” in court documents—to enroll in courses this semester after finding that the University’s investigative model violated the principle of fundamental fairness.

U. S. Representative Joe Kennedy III officially launched his campaign for U.S. Senate on Saturday. The Newton Democrat will be challenging incumbent Senator Ed Markey, BC ’68 and BC Law ’72, in the 2020 Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary. “Donald Trump has forced a reckoning in America, but meeting this moment requires more than just confronting him,” Kennedy said in an announcement video.
Lynch School Plans to Launch Four New Minors — The Heights
The Lynch School of Education and Human Development is planning to launch four new interdisciplinary minors: restorative justice; design thinking; cyberpsychology; and measurement, evaluation, statistics, and assessment (MESA). As Boston College begins to focus more on interdisciplinary programs, Lynch is following in its footsteps, said Julia DeVoy, the associate dean for Undergraduate Student Services in Lynch.
Liquor Law Violations Fall 13 Percent in 2018 — The Heights
There were nearly 200 fewer liquor law violations referred for disciplinary action and a 24 percent decrease in the number of alcohol-related transports to the Health Services Primary Care Center and St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in 2018 compared to 2017, according to a campus safety report and Associate Vice President for Student Engagement and Formation Tom Mogan. There were 1,264 liquor law violations at Boston College in 2018, compared to 1,461 in 2017 and 1,573 in 2016.
'Wall Street Journal,' 'Times Higher Education' Place BC 59th in College Rankings — The Heights
Boston College moved up eight spots, from 67 to 59, in this year’s Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (WSJ/THE) College Rankings. This is the highest ranking BC has been given in the four years that the two publications have jointly released a rankings list: BC clocked in at 60th in 2018 and 68th in 2017. The rankings assess 15 factors, which are divided into four main categories.
Rapes and Fondlings Down, According to 2018 Report — The Heights
There were 19 reported instances of rape and 23 reported instances of fondling at Boston College in 2018, according to the Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report, released on Aug. 30. Both numbers declined from 2017, during which there were 39 reported rapes and 26 reported fondlings.

BC Dining Unveils Updates for New School Year — The Heights
Several changes are coming to Boston College Dining this fall—including the creation of a new Eagle Mart on the first floor of Corcoran Commons. The Market @ Corcoran will replace On The Fly @ Corcoran, which previously operated on the upper floor of the dining hall. The new market will sell fresh produce, groceries, and Starbucks specialty drinks, in addition to featuring a pop-up kitchen space with food options that will change based on student interest.

Leslie Odom Jr. to Headline 27th Annual Pops on the Heights — The Heights
Tony and Grammy Award-winning performer Leslie Odom Jr. will headline this year’s Pops on the Heights gala, according to marketing materials for the event. This year’s Pops on the Heights, scheduled for Sept. 27, will be the 27th iteration of the fundraiser. Pops on the Heights, which is BC’s largest annual fundraiser, has raised just under $72 million total over the course of its run. Proceeds from the event fund student scholarships.
Newton High Schools to Cut School-Day Length, Delay Start Times — The Heights
The Newton school district is making plans for its high schools to adopt a new, more efficient schedule that would cut the length of an average day by 24 minutes and allow for possible later starts to the school day. The initiative plans to align Newton North and South high schools, which currently operate on different schedules, in the fall of 2020.

BC Names Joy Moore VP for Student Affairs — The Heights
After leading the division of Student Affairs on an interim basis since last August, Joy Moore, BC ’81, has been named the vice president for Student Affairs, according to a University release. “It has been a pleasure working closely with Joy over the past year,” Executive Vice President Mike Lochhead told BC News. “During this time, she has earned the respect of her staff and the students they serve, and has proved herself to be a strong leader and tireless advocate.
