And we actually miss that.” The ministry is formalising a Climate Change Unit for, among other things, guaranteeing the country’s food security in times of climate crisis.

The effects of climate change are getting worse and more challenging. The world has committed itself to fight against this. Funds have been set up for this purpose. One of these is the Green Climate Fund of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, UNFCCC. This fund was established to assist developing countries in adaptation and mitigation practices to combat climate change. But to qualify for this is not so easy.

A roadmap for addressing climate change challenges and for accessing different climate finance and climate policy options available to Suriname– this is the aim of the National Climate Agreement. The Ministry of Spatial Planning and the Environment, ROM, is now busy with the process of producing a National Climate Agreement. The aim is to finalize and sign the National Climate Agreement at the beginning of the third quarter of 2023.
