For as long as most people have been building PCs, the advice around memory has been simple enough: buy it in pairs. One stick gets you single channel and a performance hit, two sticks get you dual channel and the bandwidth your CPU actually wants, and anyone who tried to save a few dollars by starting with a singular module has usually ended up regretting it when they realize that they've left performance on the table. It's a rule that's followed generation after generation.

When I built my proper home server last year, with a 12700KF, 64GB of DDR4, and a 7900 XTX I fully expected the box it replaced to end up in a drawer. That box is an Ayaneo AM01, a mini PC with a Ryzen 5 5700U in it, and it was the first machine I ever put Proxmox on. For a good while it ran more or less everything I self-hosted all while looking like an old-school Macintosh. Surprisingly, though, it didn't end up in a drawer.

Running a large language model on your own hardware has always come with asterisks. You can do it, and both the models and the tooling have got genuinely good, but somewhere in the back of your mind you know you're running with a compromise. Models are smaller, they're usually slower, and even when they're competitive, they're not going to have the same broad level of knowledge as a cloud model from the likes of Anthropic or OpenAI.
