Calling out the Senate’s cowardice on sales of US-made AI computer chips
Analog Devices Inc. uses tools like test wafers and circuit boards to evaluate computer chips. (Mark Graves/TNS) Adam Ereli is a former State Department spokesman for Secretaries of State Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice and U.S. ambassador to Bahrain. Have some bad legislation that circumvents White House policy, crimps American competitiveness and cries out to be killed? Trim it to a handful of paragraphs, bury it in a 3,100-page bill, close your eyes and pray it escapes notice.
On China, grant the US the wisdom to distinguish between what it can and cannot change
The pendulum has been swinging wildly in Washington in recent months, from a conviction that China is rapidly displacing US leadership around the world to a growing perception that “peak China” has been reached and the country is now in economic and geopolitical decline. Both may be true. Opinions also vary on whether an economically weaker and geopolitically challenged China should be feared or embraced. On one hand, China’s slowdown reduces its resources and constrains its global ambitions.
Will US oil service companies be thwarted by business as usual in Ukraine?
Before Russia invaded Ukraine 500 or so days ago, corruption was the latter country’s biggest problem. Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, fat cat oligarchs and government officials consistently conspired to plunder Ukraine’s wealth by eliminating rivals and rigging the judiciary. The Russian bombs and missiles that have killed and maimed so many have not sufficed to banish the ghosts of Ukraine’s past, however.
Bahrain’s parliamentary elections: Seeing the forest through the trees
On Nov. 12, Bahrainis will go to the polls to elect a national parliament for the sixth time since the promulgation of the country’s current constitution in 2001. Critics point to the outlawing of opposition political parties and the subsequent boycott of their followers as indicators that Bahrain’s democracy is fatally flawed. In an ideal world, they might have a point. Political parties that work within the established rules and don’t seek to overthrow constitutional order are all well and good.
An idea whose time has come - America needs a NATO for the Middle East
Flags flutter in the wind outside NATO headquarters in Brussels, Feb. 7, 2022. (Olivier Matthys/AP) A cascading chain of global developments has given new saliency to the issue of collective security in the Middle East. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has reawakened concerns about the inviolability of internationally recognized borders and the value of deterrence.
The Minsk Group and the failure of multilateral mediation
ANALYSIS/OPINION: 2021 is a lousy year for proponents of multilateralism. NATO’s mission in Afghanistan collapsed into uncontrolled chaos. Despite renewed efforts to resolve the conflict under UN auspices, Yemen remains the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The United States’ recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara reversed decades of UN-sponsored mediation. International cooperation has given way to petty nationalism in response to the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The United States Should Rethink Human Rights
The United States Should Rethink Human Rights Human rights have been a central pillar of U.S. foreign policy ever since 1976, when Congress passed legislation requiring the Secretary of State to transmit to Congress each year a full and complete report concerning the human rights conditions of all U.N. member states. Ever since, the Department [...] Read Full Article » Show comments Hide Comments
Optimism is in short supply in Middle East, but a glimmer of light has emerged in Libya
ANALYSIS/OPINION: Since the outbreak of the Arab Spring 10 years ago, the Middle East has witnessed a bleak cascade of unrest. Catastrophic civil conflict has beset Syria, Yemen and Libya. Lebanon has become for all intents and purposes a failed state. Only the most draconian authoritarian repression keeps the lid on revolutions in Egypt and Iran. Optimism is understandably in short supply, and yet a glimmer of light has emerged recently in Libya. On Sept.
It’s Time to Support the Iranian Opposition that Tehran Wants to Destroy
It’s Time to Support the Iranian Opposition that Tehran Wants to Destroy Iran is at a crossroads. Over the past two and a half years, the Islamic Republic has witnessed three nationwide uprisings. Last November, the second of these resulted in what may have been the worst crackdown on dissent since the regime’s massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988.
Democracy Failing In Europe? Montenegro Involved In Another Shakedown
Montenegro aspires to be a respected member of the Euro-Atlantic community. Unfortunately, the blatant kleptocracy of Montenegro’s leadership calls into question its suitability as a NATO ally and fitness to join the European Union. President Milo Djukanovic has been running Montenegro – either as Prime Minister or President — for the past 30 years. His record of venality and corruption rivals that of any autocrat.
Corrupt Ukraine is ground zero in clash between East and West, US and Russia
Ukraine is the central battleground between the rapidly fraying West and the brutally ascendant East. As NATO bickers over defense contributions by member states, Article 5 commitments and its renegade member Turkey, Russia is taking concerted action to secure its borders, expand its influence and weaken the bedrock alliance that has kept the peace in Europe for the past 60 years. Ukraine lies at ground zero in this clash of civilizations between the rule of law and the power of the sword.

Russia is eating our lunch in Libya
ANALYSIS/OPINION: The United States used to be the dominant power in the Middle East. From Morocco to the Persian Gulf, American muscle and alliances shaped the region’s political and economic landscape. That is no longer the case. The vacuum created by a failure of U.S. leadership has created opportunities that our adversaries have exploited to their advantage and at our expense. America’s withdrawal from Iraq paved the way for an even more disruptive Iranian presence.
America must maintain pressure on Iran
June 11 (UPI) -- Tensions between Iran and the United States appear to have eased -- for the moment. Despite the buildup of U.S. forces in the region, war has not broken out. Iran has retreated. It had moved missiles into Iraq and was planning to attack U.S. personnel and facilities there. America's show of force persuaded the mullahs in Tehran to pull back and prevented what could have been a wider conflict.
Iran's tilt to the right fueling unrest, punishing dissent
March 26 (UPI) -- The Democratic Party in the United States and Iran's global army of apologists who advocate rejoining the 2015 Iran nuclear deal in hopes of moderating the violent, repressive character of the clerical regime in power for the last 40 years would do well to note the political changes underway in Tehran.
The U.S. Needs a Real Plan to Counter China in Africa
Lintao Zhang/Pool Photo via AP The Trump administration has made it clear that it views China as one of the greatest threats to America's economic and security interests. Unfortunately, the administration treats China's activities in Africa with less urgency. The president's new Africa strategy lacks the teeth necessary to counter China's massive investments in infrastructure and military expansion on the African continent. A much more aggressive plan to beat China is needed.
The US Needs a Real Plan to Counter China in Africa
The current toothless strategy won’t prevent Beijing from, say, squeezing supply lines to America's biggest African base. The Trump administration has made it clear that it views China as one of the greatest threats to America’s economic and security interests. Unfortunately, the administration treats China’s activities in Africa with less urgency.
Our man in Riyadh: U.S. needs Gen. John Abizaid as Saudi envoy
Jan. 4 (UPI) -- As Congress reconvenes this month, America's relationship with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia will be at the top of its agenda. The House and Senate will hold hearings and debate legislation on the war in Yemen, the death of Jamal Khashoggi, nuclear cooperation with the kingdom and a host of other issues. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee will also consider President Donald Trump's nomination of Gen. John Abizaid as his envoy to Saudi Arabia.
Anarchy in Armenia
ANALYSIS/OPINION:Armenia is in a state of anarchy, commonly understood to be an environment of lawlessness or political disorder due to the absence of governmental authority.
Commentary: Be Patient with Poland
Poland's president, Andrzej Duda, will pay his first official visit to the United States when he meets with President Donald Trump in the White House on Tuesday. Critics of Poland will argue that the U.S. should hold its ally's feet to the fire over a disturbing pattern of authoritarianism that is at odds with trans-Atlantic values and policies. Such an approach, while certainly well intentioned, would be a mistake.
Commentary: The ‘Beijing Consensus’ Bursts One of Africa’s Last Remaining Bubbles
The African states that have failed to fulfill expectations are many and dispiriting. Zimbabwe – where last month's contested elections have produced after 30 years of rule by Robert Mugabe – is but the most recent example. The bloom came off the South African rose a decade ago, when rampant crime, elite kleptocracy and political tribalism replaced the promise of a pluralistic post-apartheid renaissance.

West Must Hold Czech Republic Accountable to Democratic Norms
Miloš Zeman looks on with his staff on Jan. 27 in Prague after he was re-elected president of the Czech Republic. (Radek Mica/Getty Images) The Czech Republic has long been regarded as a jewel of Western liberalism. From the 1968 Prague Spring to the 1989 Velvet Revolution, mention of the country conjures images of a fiercely independent resistance to Soviet rule, as well as the rise of responsible democratic governance as embodied by founding fathers such as Tomáš Masaryk and Václav Havel.
Iran's radical Islamic government will likely not stay in power for long
The anti-American, radical Islamic theocracy that rules Iran with an iron fist today will likely not be able to hold onto power for much longer. Right now Iran is a ticking time bomb that will explode without a systemic and transformational reform of its economy. And there’s no chance the ruling clerics will make such fundamental reforms.
Can Kazakhstan Broker A U.S.-Russian Rapprochement? Via @dailycaller
In the next few days, Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev is scheduled to meet one-on-one with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, followed by high-level consultations between U.S. and Kazakh officials. This visit is noteworthy for several reasons. Kazakhstan is the largest and most important country of Central Eurasia, which is itself a strategically vital region that borders Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Russia and China.
Nations Are Wielding Their Sovereign Wealth Funds as Tools of Power
Nations Are Wielding Their Sovereign Wealth Funds as Tools of Power A year ago, in Seychelles, an Indian Ocean archipelago, the leader of the United Arab Emirates arranged a secret meeting between Erik Prince — founder of the security firm Blackwater, Trump supporter, and brother of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos — and Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), which is Russia’s sovereign wealth fund.
How Are Sovereign Wealth Fund Decisions Made?
In 2015, the Qatar Investment Authority (QIA) — Qatar’s sovereign wealth fund (SWF) — declared its intention to invest $35 billion in the United States over the coming five years. In making the announcement, a senior Qatari official noted that the state was taking this step not because of politics, but because it “made good business sense.” He was half right.
In Mideast, Top-Down Reform Trumps Bottom-Up Change | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD
If the Arab Spring taught us anything, it is that populist forces once unleashed can lead to widespread disruption and destruction. Egypt, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Bahrain have all suffered to varying degrees from the chaos when revolution from below meets resistance from above and foreign powers exploit the conflicts for their own purposes.

Trump Goes Global To Defeat Iran
On Oct. 13, President Trump outlined a global strategy to defeat Iran that focused not only on its nuclear program, but committed the U.S. to aggressively counter Iran's destabilizing regional activity, funding of terror and ballistic missile program. The president also spoke compellingly about the suffering of the Iranian people at the hands of a brutal clerical regime.
The Kurdish Explosion Is Unleashing Demons
As if the Middle East were not explosive enough, it is on the verge of yet another conflict that threatens further destruction and division in a region of vital geostrategic importance. The “Kurdish question,” which has bedeviled empires and superpowers for centuries, has returned as a dangerous flashpoint with potentially seismic implications.

Is the Czech Republic Falling Under Putin’s Shadow?
Is the Czech Republic Falling Under Putin’s Shadow? On Oct. 20, voters in the Czech Republic will go to the polls for Parliamentary elections. Opinion polls show that the anti-EU, anti-immigrant ANO party will win a convincing victory. The Czech Republic has long been a bastion of pro-Western, liberal, tolerant, cosmopolitan pluralism. The Prague Spring of 1968 challenged Soviet domination of Eastern Europe, and the Velvet Revolution of 1989 ended it.

You should practice what you preach
When a special prosecutor is called in to clean up and legally enforce change in an entire country’s system, you would expect that person to live by the values and words that he or she defends in the courts every day. Unfortunately, these expectations do not ring true in the case of Macedonia’s Special Prosecutor Katica Janeva. The Special Prosecutor’s Office was formed last summer as part of an agreement between political parties in the small Balkan country.
Keep Up the Pressure on Iran
One year into the life of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the international agreement that dismantled Iran’s nuclear program, the best hopes and worst fears of the deal’s advocates and critics have failed to materialize. Those who believed that the nuclear deal would serve as the first chink in the armor of the clerical cohort ruling Iran have been disappointed.
The Diego Garcia Dispute: Time To Resolve International Disagreements
Russia’s annexation of Crimea has sent shivers throughout the international community because it revives the practice of using force to settle territorial disputes. The United States and the European Union have responded with serious sanctions on Russia in order to dissuade others from taking similarly destabilizing moves.
