NATURE NOTES: Vagrants make their way to unusual places
Often times, going birding is a fun, simple venture. You go out with your gear, you see a bird, and you try to identify it. During this time of year, things get fun when the migrant species come through. And every year may bring some surprise species that weren’t seen in your area the previous year. Those species might be explained by their migration route, destination and recent weather events. But sometimes, you can get those “what the heck?” species.

NATURE NOTES: Not every bird comes by song innately
When you walk outside here in Texas, there is a very good chance you will see at least one bird flying around. And even more than likely, you will hear them singing or calling, too. The bird calls or songs that we hear every day are often taken for granted, but each of these chirps has its own natural history. To start, the sounds a bird makes comes from a tiny organ located at the top of the windpipe called the syrinx.

Gulls and Terns
Go to any Texas beach and you’re bound to see three things: sand, water, and gulls. Unfortunately, gulls are some of the most difficult birds to identify, and are often overlooked for this reason! In fact, we at Gulf Coast Bird Observatory are hosting a whole class devoted to identifying gulls and terns on the Texas Coast. There’s more variety than you might think! The first step in identifying gulls is acknowledging a hard fact: there’s no such thing as a seagull. At least not in avian literature.

NATURE NOTES: Scrub-jays find homes as endemic species
When researching species, either floral or faunal, you can look at a map and find where the particular species resides. Some species have wide ranges of occurrence or winter and summer in different locations. Then there are some species that call only a single geographic place home, whether that home is a single mountain range, an island or one country in Europe. These are known as endemic species.

Nature Notes: Orioles are awe-inspiring
Have you ever heard of an Oriole? No, not the black and white cookie. Orioles are colorful birds that eat berries, fruit, insects, and nectar. These birds are not only interesting to look at, they also have an intriguing natural history. To start, there is a distinction between Old World Orioles and New World Orioles. Old World Orioles are in the family Oriolidae, which contains Figbirds, Pitohuis, and Orioles like the Black-naped Oriole, the Brown Oriole, and the Green Oriole, to name a few.

NATURE NOTES: Prehistoric-looking shoebill fascinates
While every species of bird is unique in its own way, there are some species that stand out more than others. One of these is the shoebill. This bird, endemic to Central and Northeast Africa, stands between 3.5 to 5 feet and has an 8 foot wingspan. It has gray plumage with large yellow eyes and long legs. With its huge height and striking appearance, this bird strongly resembles a dinosaur … or perhaps a muppet. Despite its size, the most striking thing about this bird is it’s big, honking beak.
Nature Notes: The shoebill is a 'living dinosaur'

Nature Notes: Bone appetit: The Lammergeier
What is a nice meal to you? Pizza? A salad? Tacos? While those might sound good to a human being, the Lammergeier (Gypaetus barbatus) has a hankering for something a little crunchier. The Lammergeier, also known as the bearded vulture, is a peculiar bird. While most birds eat seeds, fruit, insects, or meat, the Lammergeier prefers to eat bones. It goes without saying that eating bones is… strange. There are other birds, like vultures, that will eat animals that have been dead for a while.

NATURE NOTES: Birdwatching for Beginners
Sometimes getting into a new hobby like birdwatching can be intimidating. But birdwatching is a fun activity for everyone, including beginners. While the simple act of watching and enjoying wild birds is great a way to pass the time, the actual challenge comes in identifying which bird species you are looking at. That question can be hard, even for some of the most experienced birdwatchers. kAm(96? ECJ:?8 E@ :56?E:7J 2 3:C5[ 8@ D=@H 2?5 5@?’E 86E 5:D4@FC2865] q:C5D 42?

Nature Notes: Birds can be smarter than you think
Often when we admire a bird, it’s for its beautiful feathers or stunning song. Northern cardinals are beloved for their distinctive red feathers and red-winged blackbirds are known for their songs. I know those birds got me excited the first time I encountered them. But what about a crow or a raven? These birds have feathers that are entirely black and a song that often, and annoyingly, wakes people up from a nice sleep. But there is more to these birds than we give them credit for.

Overcoming the challenges of adopting Behavior-Driven Development in the enterprise
Behavior-driven development (BDD) is a software development process that attempts to solve the problem of implementing poorly defined requirements. It seeks to leverage the domain expertise of business and QA professionals to ensure that developers build the correct software. Let’s begin by describing the evolutionary process that has prompted many organizations to explore BDD. At some point, your organization decided it needed to accelerate releases and get to the market faster.
