What was your first job as a journalist?
I wrote freelance sports stories for local daily newspapers and political pieces for the Seattle Weekly.
Have you ever used a typewriter?
Yes. I also have two on the shelf behind my desk.
How is social media changing news?
It makes it easier for people to only see news that comports to their world view, stunting their intellectual growth.
Who's your favorite fictional journalist?
Michael Keaton's character in "The Paper."
What does it mean to be a journalist?
It means to document the world around us and hold the powerful to account.
How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?
Via email.
What tools and software do you use to do your job?
The usual Google suite: Docs, Sheets, Analytics, Search Console. Plus I use WordPress for our website CMS, Parse.ly, QGIS and RStudio.
What's your favorite social network?
Twitter.
Who do you wish followed you?
I'm already followed by Bob Garfield and Tanzina Vega, so I don't know what could be better.
Why did you become a journalist?
So I could better understand the world by writing about it.
Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?
Yes. I wrote stories and opinion pieces.
What story are you most proud of writing or working on?
A series of stories in 2019 that took a deep dive into Reading's rental market.
What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?
Read as much as you can, and not just the news.
When's the best time to pitch you?
In the mornings?

I don't remember.
What's your favorite drink?
a nice pot of jasmine green tea.
When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?
Reading a book or out for a walk.
