The game changer of 2023 for advisers: The rise of ‘qualified advisers’
But the term ‘qualified advisers’ sparked more than a few double-takes. It’s a title that’s stirring up quite the storm, and honestly, it couldn’t be more off the mark if it tried. I think this change will create a two-tier system. It’s like having a baby and choosing between a private obstetrician and the public system. I went private for the personalised care and I see financial advice headed in a similar direction.
Profit with purpose: Incorporating social initiatives into financial advising
For many of us in the financial advising industry, our core mission is to enable financial stability and growth for our clients. But our influence need not stop there. As experts in financial empowerment, we have a unique opportunity to extend that empowerment to marginalised communities and social causes, all while growing our businesses. My journey to profit with purpose I’ve long valued the principle of giving back, a belief deeply rooted in my personal history.
I don’t want to finish the year strong!
Op-Ed If I see another marketer or business coach’s post or email telling me to finish the year strong, I will scream. By Adele Martin - December 19, 2022 1 comments I hate the hustle culture. Maybe it’s because of the pandemic, maybe it’s because I’m now 40, or maybe it’s because I’m tired from having two kids under two.
Silver linings playbook for the advice industry
Here’s the glass half full view of the financial advice industry: Red tape will likely be reduced, making advice more affordable and accessible. However, affordability will not come at the expense of quality, and high professional standards will be upheld. The adviser of the future will be a financial coach for loyal clients, and their relationship will be more values-based rather than transactional. Consumer trust will be reinstated.
The resilience of advice
Recently, there has been much commentary on rising interest rates and inflation and the impacts on investment returns and your clients’ outcomes. There have been very few sectors which have produced positive returns in the last 12 months and so the impacts have been felt across the range of investor profiles. No one has escaped unscathed. It can be challenging in these conditions to feel confident that your advice is delivering value to your clients.
Don’t mention the war: Vanguard’s super move is a challenge to advisers and industry funds
Every so often you come across a story about a soldier from World War II who doesn’t know the war is over and is found living in a jungle somewhere, still fighting the battles of 50 years ago. The industry funds versus advisers war is a bit like that. Industry funds never really were anti-adviser, nor anti-advice, per se. They were anti-commission and anti-conflicted remuneration.
Defending advice: A two-tiered model is no victory for the profession
The parable of the tortoise and the hare is particularly relevant for financial services; the hare with all her natural advantages and skills speeds towards the finishing line only to be overtaken and lose the race because of her delays and bad choices. With the recognition of an advice profession within view, the fragmented advice industry pauses and, distracted by trivialities, is overtaken (and supplanted) by product issuers and software providers.
I Love Failure - Professional Planner
Adele Martin We have to learn to love failure to grow. It’s a hard concept to accept as we have spent a lifetime with the education system telling us that being right was good – you got a “green tick” and being wrong was bad – you got a red cross. And for us left brain thinking financial advisers it’s even harder to embrace failure as we are so logic and compliance focused. But if we are only trying things we know we will succeed at then we aren’t taking risks.
The new way to give advice
Last year, I celebrated 20 years in the wonderful profession that is financial advice. By Adele Martin - October 31, 2022 0 comments To say that there has been some changes from that time is an understatement. When I started, there was no CRM or modelling tools, no fund manager websites and we had rooms full of filing cabinets. But probably the biggest change I’ve seen (apart from length of SOA) is the advice itself.
Online education is a good strategy to retain clients: Practice consultants
Promoting a financial advice business in a market where advisers are becoming a rare commodity is more important than ever, say two practice consultants. Elixir Consulting managing director Sue Viskovic, who has built her career on helping financial advisers improve the way they deliver advice, says advisers need to market themselves more now than ever.
Industry-led solutions are the way to change the regulatory dynamic
The advice industry would be better served by collaborating to develop its own solutions to current challenges so we can end this unproductive cycle where the Government and the regulator dictates the answers and the industry is left to try and adapt this to the lived experience on the ground.

Why do more millennials have expensive gym memberships than see financial advisers?
My husband and I (like most of my millennial financial planning clients) currently spend more money a year going to the gym then it costs to see a financial adviser (combined we pay nearly $7,000 p.a.). Yet remember the 80’s when gyms were a tin sheds with cement floors. It wasn’t an essential part of your budget or mainstream. The fitness industry makeover came because they got much better at client experience and education.

To put it simply, superannuation is a tax structure.
