The ex-Labour leader of Aberdeen City Council lashed out at his former party for its oil and gas tax plans saying the message is “drop dead, Aberdeen”. Independent councillor Barney Crockett says Labour has “nothing to offer” when it comes to protecting North Sea oil and gas jobs. His fury comes after new Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced she would increase the windfall tax on oil and gas firms to 38%, bringing the headline rate of tax on upstream oil and gas activities to 78%.

Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross has been left humiliated by Tory Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s budget vow to extend the controversial windfall tax on energy profits. Cutting the levy had been a central demand of the Scottish Tories to help in the key north-east election battleground and a dividing line between Labour and the SNP. But their pleas to halt the levy fell on deaf ears.

Aberdeen firms tell Jeremy Hunt to scrap windfall ‘supertax’

North-east businesses are piling pressure on Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to ditch the controversial windfall tax in his spring budget next week. Russell Borthwick, chief executive of Aberdeen and Grampian Chamber of Commerce, wrote to the senior Tory minister to make the case for it to be urgently scrapped. In his letter, he said the tax has “knocked investor confidence” and is “already costing jobs with tens of thousands more at risk”.
