Dendritic cells (DCs) initiate immunity and also antigen-specific tolerance mediated by extrathymic regulatory T (Treg) cells that prevent subsequent T cell priming. It remains unclear how DCs regulate induction of such tolerance. Here we report that T cell activation by CD11c+ DCs in steady state had no lasting impact on subsequent immune responses and resulted in neither induction of Treg cells, nor priming of autoimmune T cells.
