Abstract Geomagnetic storms are a key driver of space weather impacts. The enhancement of ionospheric currents during these events can produce geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) that may interfere with the operation of ground infrastructure such as power grids, pipelines, and railway networks. It is therefore critical to understand how, why, and when very intense GICs may occur during an extended geomagnetic storm interval.

Speeding Up Every few minutes, Earth-sized “droplets” of plasma rain down from space toward Earth. Instead of crashing catastrophically to the ground, these droplets, called magnetosheath jets, hit and are deflected by the outer reaches of Earth’s magnetic field. Despite their frequent occurrence near Earth and likely ubiquity across the solar system, the study of magnetosheath jets is young, and there is much we do not know about their origins and behavior.

Apart from creating the Windows 95 start-up sound, Brian Eno is perhaps best known for pioneering the genre of ‘ambient music’, where extended instrumental compositions slowly loop and bubble, creating soundscapes that are intricate yet discreet. His work in this area went on to directly inspire artists such as Aphex Twin, William Basinski, and Tim Hecker. Long before this, however, Eno was doing something really quite different.
