Amazon River Breezes Mimic Pollution in Clouds
Aerosols are tiny particles suspended in the air. They can cool the climate by making clouds brighter and longer-lasting. Scientists rely on satellite observations to measure the aerosol-cloud interaction, but distinguishing human impacts from natural weather patterns remains a challenge. Christensen et al. Ten people were killed in a large landslide in Papua New Guinea triggered by heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Maila. On 9 April 2026, a large landslide occurred at Lamarain in the Inland Baining LLG of Gazelle District in Papua New Guinea. The landslide was triggered by heavy rainfall associated with the passage of Tropical Cyclone Maila. Media reports indicate that ten people were killed by the landslide and that a further 18 people were injured.
Navigating the Past with Ancient Stone Compass Needles
Magnetic rocks with iron oxide concentrations act as natural chroniclers of Earth’s past continental movements. Using small samples of rocks, scientists can isolate magnetic grains that were frozen in orientation as the rock solidified. Since 1994 there has been a 32 times increase in the number of research outputs with the keyword “landslide”. In a couple of weeks time, I have the pleasure of being one of the invited speakers at the Landslide Risk and Geoengineering (LaRGE) Conference in Queenstown, New Zealand. Ahead of that presentation, I’ve been using Scopus to look at the growth of research in landslides since 1994, the year that I submitted my PhD thesis.

Glaciers May Flow into the Ocean More Quickly Than We Think
Models of glacial flow and retreat rely on estimates of glacial ice viscosity, the measure of the ice’s resistance to flow. Ice viscosity is dependent on the stress applied to the glacier. Most ice sheet models use a standard equation to model ice flow that includes the variable n, called the stress exponent. A larger value of n means ice viscosity is more sensitive to changes in stress.
