This past week, a couple of resources became available to help companies deal with the breadth of mental health issues that workers are facing. First, the US government announced this week that it is offering guidance to help companies address opioid emergencies. OSHA issued a fact sheet that offers practical steps that help companies recognize the signs of an overdose and act immediately.

Most people might not admit it, but being called an athlete is a compliment. It evokes a level of competency that has been earned through hard work. So, the term industrial athlete is quite apt for people doing the hard physical labor in manufacturing as well as warehousing. The term originated when sports medicine researchers noted the similarities between workers in physically demanding jobs and athletes. As far back as 2015, Ford Motor Company adopted the term.

What does it take for a company to reach a level of safety excellence so significantly high that they are recognized as one of America’s Safest Companies? It’s not annual revenue—this year’s winners are small, medium and large-sized companies, some earning less than $50 million and others well over $1 billion.
