Eat with Afia A Celebration of Plant-Based Ghanaian Cooking
By: Afia Amoako About The Book About The Author Reviews Afia Amoako grew up in a kitchen that was never quiet, never empty, and never boring. Food, she understood from a young age, was the essence of her family’s Ghanaian culture. It was represented in the red palm oil that colored their stews; it was pounded into the plantain and cassava-based fufu they ate with soups; and it shone through in the indigenous spices that flavored kebabs and so much more.

Correction: Impact of immune evasion, waning and boosting on dynamics of population mixing between a vaccinated majority and unvaccinated minority

Spatial and Temporal Hotspot Analysis of COVID-19 in Toronto
DNF has served on advisory boards related to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 vaccines for Seqirus, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Sanofi-Pasteur Vaccines, and has served as a legal expert on issues related to COVID-19 epidemiology for the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario. ART was employed by the Public Health Agency of Canada when the research was conducted. The work does not represent the views of the Public Health Agency of Canada.
Vaccine effectiveness against hospitalization among adolescent and pediatric SARS-CoV-2 cases between May 2021 and January 2022 in Ontario, Canada: A retrospective cohort study
Loading metrics Open Access Peer-reviewed Research Article Abstract Background Vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 have been shown to reduce risk of infection as well as severe disease among those with breakthrough infection in adults. The latter effect is particularly important as immune evasion by Omicron variants appears to have made vaccines less effective at preventing infection.
Relative Pandemic Severity in Canada and Four Peer Nations During the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic
Abstract Introduction: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic resulted in extraordinary health and economic impacts. The apparent heterogeneity in effectiveness of national responses to the pandemic, and the mechanisms underlying this heterogeneity, remain uncertain.
The authors respond to criticisms of their model parameters
We appreciate the opportunity to respond to correspondence related to our article.1 Critics of our paper suggest that our choice of model parameters is incorrect; our interpretation of our model results is incorrect; and our research stokes anger toward those who choose to remain unvaccinated against SARS-CoV-2. In our model, we treat contacts with vaccinated and unvaccinated infectives as equally infectious, which has the effect of biasing our results against vaccination.
Call for retraction of paper entitled: "Impact of population mixing between vaccinated and unvaccinated subpopulations on infectious disease dynamics: implications for SARS-CoV-2 transmission"
First of all, please refer to this thorough and excellent review of the paper by Byram Bridle, and a list of scientific reasons why the aforementioned paper should never have been published. This paper indeed went through peer review. Who were the reviewers? I smell an investigation coming your way. My take? The point of publishing a low level piece of writing like this is to create division. It is that simple.
Impact of population mixing between vaccinated and unvaccinated subpopulations on infectious disease dynamics: implications for SARS-CoV-2 transmission
Model We constructed a simple compartmental model of a respiratory viral disease.26 The model is described in Appendix 1 (available at www.cmaj.ca/lookup/doi/10.1503/cmaj.212105/tab-related-content). People are represented as residing in 3 possible “compartments:” susceptible to infection (S), infected and infectious (I), and recovered from infection with immunity (R). We divided the compartments to reflect 2 connected subpopulations: vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
Vaccine Effectiveness Against Hospitalization Among Adolescent and Pediatric SARS-CoV-2 Cases in Ontario, Canada
doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2022.03.24.22272919 Abstract Background Vaccines to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe outcomes were approved in 2021 for adolescent and subsequently pediatric populations. With the emergence of variants of concern, it is important to continue to assess vaccine effectiveness against both infection and severe disease manifestations.
Impact of Population Mixing Between a Vaccinated Majority and Unvaccinated Minority on Disease Dynamics: Implications for SARS-CoV-2
Abstract Background The speed of vaccine development has been a singular achievement during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. However, anti-vaccination movements and disinformation efforts have resulted in suboptimal uptake of available vaccines. Vaccine opponents often frame their opposition in terms of the rights of the unvaccinated. Our objective was to explore the impact of mixing of vaccinated and unvaccinated populations on risk among vaccinated individuals.
Potential interventions to support HCV treatment uptake among HIV co-infected people in Canada: Perceptions of patients and health care providers
Patient-perceived interventions Table 2 presents the rank-ordered list of interventions proposed by patients and some illustrative quotations. The interventions are explained here in order of decreasing importance. Rank-ordered list of interventions to support HCV treatment uptake for HIV–HCV co-infected populations according to patients 1. Care model: Multidisciplinary clinics The most important intervention from the patients’ stance was multidisciplinary teams.
