Women’s football, Baul music blocked in Dirai
Share Two events involving women have been targeted and shut down in Sunamganj’s Dirai upazila within just 18 days, stoking fears over freedom of expression and women’s rights in the birthplace of legendary Baul singer Shah Abdul Karim. On Thursday, a private birthday concert featuring two female Baul singers was abruptly cancelled after local objectors complained to police.
Unauthorised resorts mushroom in Cox’s Bazar, Sylhet
Hotels, resorts and restaurants are mushrooming across the Cox’s Bazar and Sylhet regions – two of the country’s major tourist destinations – often without the necessary approvals or safety measures, raising serious concerns about regulatory oversight and tourists’ safety. Some operators are passing off a handful of rooms in residential buildings as resorts, while others are cutting hills, hillocks and forests in Moulvibazar to build tourist accommodation.
A Facebook post, 10 hours in police custody
Share “Everything was supposed to return to normal on the 13th, following the election on the 12th. Yet nothing has improved. The honourable minister has made our lives harder than ever.” These few lines criticising Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Ariful Haque Choudhury on Facebook cost a Sylhet schoolteacher 10 hours in police custody.
The teachers Sylhet forgot
Share Around 12:30 pm on 25 August 2024, Hosne Ara, principal of Blue Bird School and College in Sylhet city, was working in her office. Suddenly, a group of students arrived on campus under the banner of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Carrying the national flag, some took positions on the rooftops while others gathered on the playground. Through a loudspeaker, they demanded the principal’s removal. Amid the tension, students were sent home.
Sylhet’s tourism paradise trapped in a service drought
Blessed with emerald tea estates, crystal-clear stone rivers, and misty hillscapes, Sylhet remains one of Bangladesh’s most enchanting jewels. Every year, hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers flock to this north-eastern paradise, particularly during peak Eid and Puja breaks. Yet, behind the idyllic postcard views lies a frustrating reality for travellers: a region rich in raw beauty, but severely impoverished in basic infrastructure.
Sylhet fallout widens BNP cracks
A factional divide within the ruling BNP in Sylhet came into sharp focus during President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s visit on Wednesday, after a key section of the party boycotted a civic reception held in his honour. The snub exposed deep-seated tensions over organisational coordination, political leverage, and access to influential government appointments, even as the party remains outwardly united.
Sylhet’s stone loot continues despite ban on paper
A ban exists, court orders remain in place, and several quarries have no legal leases, yet illegal extraction and transport of stones and sand continue openly across Sylhet. From Lovachhara in Kanaighat upazila, a border area of Sylhet, to Atgram Bazar in Zakiganj upazila, a 20-kilometre river route has become a major channel for transporting stones.
Trees felled for road project that ‘does not exist’
A plan to cut down around 4,500 trees along the Sunamganj–Sachnabazar road has triggered protests and raised questions over the justification for the move, with the Roads and Highways Department (RHD) saying it has no ongoing project to widen the road. The Forest Department has said the trees are being felled as the road from Sunamganj to Sachnabazar will be expanded. However, the RHD said it currently has no project for widening the stretch from Tuker Bazar to Sachna.
Climate impact: Heat, floods disrupt Sylhet’s ecological balance
One day it rains, the next day intense heat returns. At times, Sylhet faces prolonged rainfall, while sudden dry spells disrupt the seasonal cycle. Over the past few years, climate change has altered the region’s temperature and rainfall patterns, affecting its haors, soil and agriculture. Experts blame unplanned land use, rapid urbanisation and excessive economic activities for disturbing nature’s balance.
When one child falls ill, the whole family is at risk
For many families battling measles, one child’s illness is only the beginning. Within days of returning home, infected children are often followed by siblings developing fever and rashes. Doctors say measles is among the world’s most contagious diseases, making household transmission particularly difficult to prevent without effective isolation.
Flood misery deepens across Ctg, Sylhet
Wading through chest-deep water in Bashkhali area of Chattogram, Asif Hosein was making his way to a market one kilometre away, he must fetch drinkable water. The college student, and his parents, left their home for shelter after the devastating flood submerged their residence three days ago. Accompanying Asif was Mokim, barely in his teens, out with the same mission. For two days straight, they survived on nothing but dry food – the only relief that had reached them.
Household Aedes breeding fuels dengue threat in Sylhet
Aedes mosquito larvae have been detected in 8–10 per cent of households in Sylhet City Corporation areas, raising concerns over a renewed risk of dengue transmission even as case numbers remain comparatively low in the region. City health officials say the findings point to widespread breeding of Aedes mosquitoes inside domestic environments, particularly in stagnant water collected in everyday household containers.
Yaba enters through Sylhet border via coded trade
Yaba tablets are being smuggled into Bangladesh from India through the Sylhet border using coded slang and increasingly sophisticated concealment tactics, with the Jaintiapur–Bianibazar route emerging as a key transit corridor for trafficking networks, according to local sources and law enforcement.

Election manifestos 2018: What do they say about water?
Pakistan is barrelling towards a water crisis, which is more man-made than enforced by nature. For too long now, the sixth most populous country in the world has let its taps run, unchecked and unmonitored. Agriculture, Pakistan’s second-largest contributor to the GDP, uses 95 per cent of the country's water resources. If the farmers continue to pump water out of the ground heedlessly, then by 2025 there will be a drought-like situation. In other words, Pakistan’s breadbasket is under threat.
