Over seven months in 2022, CMS Water Engineering lost nine lucrative contracts to repair water and wastewater treatment plants in Gauteng, the North West, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. Cancelled contracts should have led to CMS being blacklisted with National Treasury. Instead, Rudolf Schoeman Jnr managed to secure one last contract from the government: a R368-million deal with the Department of Water and Sanitation to maintain “the most important bulk water supply system in the country”.
