Alabama miner dies in machine accident

Posted: Jul 2, 2026 / 06:20 PM CDT Updated: Jul 2, 2026 / 06:20 PM CDT TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A 24-year-old miner was killed in a machine accident Thursday evening. The Tuscaloosa Sheriff’s Office said the miner was found unresponsive and injured around 6:00 p.m. at an active mine operated by Warrior Met Coal located on Hwy 69 in Berry. The miner, identified as Cordova native Justin Calloway, was transported to the surface, but did not survive the accident.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office searching for missing Lipscomb man JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is seeking assistance from the public in locating a missing 68-year-old man. Robert Hooper, of Lipscomb, was last seen at his home in the Lipscomb area on June 26. It is believed he walked away from his home, and it is not known what he was last wearing. He's described as being 6-foot-8-inches and 230 pounds.
