DeKalb father pleads guilty after 7-year-old son shot, killed with unattended gun

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A DeKalb County father has learned his sentence after pleading guilty to the death of his son, who was killed with his unattended firearm on Thursday, the district attorney's office said. 44-year-old Dante Lamar Daugherty took a non-negotiated guilty plea for second-degree murder, two counts of second-degree cruelty to children in connection with the death of his 7-year-old son Z'ayre Daugherty. He was sentenced to 10 years, with two years in custody and the rest on probation.

Family demands justice at rally after no charges in 21-year-old's shooting death in Douglas County

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. — Community members stood with a grieving mother on Saturday to fight for justice for her 21-year-old son, who was killed earlier this year. After a man admitted to killing her son, Malachi Mitchell, who was found shot dead in a car during a January traffic stop, the Douglas County district attorney announced no charges would be filed. The driver, who was stopped for a traffic violation, drove around with Mitchell's lifeless body in the passenger seat.

Former Falcon among final defendants convicted, sentenced in human trafficking and gang case

ATLANTA — The final two defendants were convicted and sentenced in a human trafficking and gang case, including a Former Atlanta Falcon, in Gwinnett County on Friday. According to the Georgia Attorney General's Office, Former Falcon Eric Johnson, 49, who played in the NFL for six seasons and Bobby Downing, 43, both pleaded guilty in the case. Johnson pleaded guilty to gang, racketeering and pimping charges. He was sentenced to 20 years, with the first 10 years to be served in prison.
