The three officers had gone to the academy together and finished field training together. They'd been on the Avondale police force for almost two years the day they almost died together trying to save Brian Mealer's life. Mealer's van had veered off the road on July 16 and crashed into a power pole in Avondale, shearing it in two. A live power line was on the roof when the three first responders showed up and pulled Mealer out.

A San Francisco woman pleaded guilty to selling $92,000 worth of imported jewelry falsely marketed as Native-made and was sentenced in federal court in Arizona. Molly Breivis, 57, was fined $10,000 for selling jewelry produced in Asia through her eBay stores, MollysJewelry and GEMVOLT, while falsely claiming the pieces were made by Navajo, Laguna, Zuni or Apache artisans. The sales violated the Indian Arts and Crafts Act. Breivis operated the stores from 2020 to 2024.

Tempe police respond to shots fired but report no injuries

Tempe police responded Saturday afternoon to reports of gunfire south of Tempe Town Lake, where bullets struck a building and a vehicle near East Lemon Street and South Stanley Place. No injuries were reported. The circumstances surrounding the Aug. 8 shooting remained under investigation, Tempe police spokesperson Officer Lindsey Fernandez said in an email. Police had not identified a suspect or disclosed what type of weapon was used. No one has been arrested, according to police.
