A spacesuit, a dream and virtual reality meet at ‘The Infinite’ in Tacoma
TACOMA — Ted Huetter, who worked for NASA for 10 years and sometimes wears a spacesuit, says he’s “an astro-not.” Though he often looks ready for liftoff, his feet are on terra firma for his role as a representative of the Museum of Flight sharing knowledge about space programs. On this hot summer day, his mission took him to the Tacoma Armory for “The Infinite,” where participants get a virtual-reality space experience. His spacesuit filled two large suitcases and a backpack.

Sometimes, Washington’s official symbols breathe real life into our state of being
WHEN IT WAS announced in March that pickleball had been named the state’s official sport, becoming another symbol for Washington, I wondered, “Why?” I have a friend who plays tennis almost daily and dislikes the added lines-of-confusion to the court from pickleball. Why not choose lacrosse, a traditional tribal game, though its origins are in the Northeast 1,000 years ago? History.com calls it America’s oldest team sport. This prompted me to look up our state symbols.

Office machine company finds fulfillment among timeworn typewriters - and their fans
BREMERTON, Wash. — “If you’re in your 90s, it’s same-day service,” says Paul Lundy of Bremerton Office Machine Company. “Everyone else waits in line.” (It generally takes two to three months to have a typewriter taken care of.) Ninety-seven-year-old Muriel Erickson arrives with her 1968 Hermes. Friends have driven her in from Sequim. She’s brought it in for an annual tuneup. Lundy says, “Ready in 2 ½ hours.” There’s a nearby Starbucks to wait. Erickson is not his oldest client.

You never forget your first typewriter - especially if you still have it
Feb. 27, 2022 at 7:00 am By Seattle Times staff photographer BEFORE I HEADED off to college (where I’d become the first in my family to attend, and graduate), my parents purchased a Royal Futura 800 portable typewriter for me. They were thinking pre-med. A doctor down the road. I had the physician’s handwriting, barely legible on prescriptions. Typing on the Royal would bring clarity. Instead, it led to my first degree in philosophy. My dear mother, Alice, asked, “Philosophy?
