Tower Hill: A Plantation on the Edge of Rebellion
. Sept. 2026. 416p. ISBN 9781324117346. $35. HISTORY COPY ISBN In this skillfully written book, historian Taylor (Univ. of Virginia; American Civil Wars) presents the struggles of one plantation-owning family, arguing that the misery of plantation life set the stage for Nat Turner’s 1831 rebellion. During the last years of his life, William Nivison Blow (1855–1907) wrote a detailed description of his family’s plantation, Tower Hill in Sussex County, VA.

A ★★½ review of Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Thor: The Dark World ★★½ The first two "Thor" movies aren't necessarily bad, but they are understandably considered the weakest entries in MCU's Infinity Saga. At least the first one had a bit more charm with Thor and Jane Foster falling in love. Here, the story simply isn't all that interesting, nor is the lead villain Malekith.

David Robinson Reviews: Edinburgh Books
‘It’s hard to imagine any city getting two such excellent books about it at the same time, and they complement each other perfectly.’ 2024 marks 900 years since Edinburgh was first named and recorded in a letter by King David I, and to celebrate the occasion a number of excellent books on Auld Reekie’s history have been published. In his latest review, David Robinson compares two of these, their contrasting approaches, and the storied city they mythologise.

Madly, Deeply: The Alan Rickman Diaries
Dine Hard There’s a widespread tendency to mistake actors for interesting people. In reality, of course, they are often no more interesting than someone with a knack for mimickry, like the old friend who insists on doing pitch-perfect Alan Partridge impersonations. It seems funny, but is it really? One exception to the general rule is the late Alan Rickman. True, his diaries have been handicapped by a slightly dubious title.

Many Saints of Newark Theatrical Review
Individually, the cast is very good but as an ensemble they are outstanding. HBO has always been known for its entertaining, high-quality original series. From True Blood to Game of Thrones and so many in between, it is difficult to count how many Emmys their properties have won. From 1999 to 2007 one of these shows was The Sopranos, which told the story of an Italian mob boss living in New Jersey who was trying to juggle his family life with his responsibilities as a Mafia Boss.

Can Micheal Gandolfini Embody The Soprano's New Devil?
The Many Saints of Newark Alan Taylor New Line Cinema | HBO Films 1 October 2021 (US) On the fifth-ever episode of HBO’s The Sopranos, titular patriarch Tony (James Gandolfini) strangles a man to death with a pair of cables. When the series concluded on an ambiguous note nearly a decade later, audiences were left emotionally bereft at the unknown fate of the man who perpetrated such hideous crimes.
The Great War: A History in Photos
One hundred years ago, in the summer of 1914, a series of events set off an unprecedented global conflict that ultimately claimed the lives of more than 16 million people, dramatically redrew the maps of Europe, and set the stage for the 20th Century. A century ago, an assassin, a Serbian nationalist, killed the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary as he visited Sarajevo. This act was the catalyst for a massive conflict that lasted four years.

This year is the centenary of her birth – currently being marked by events in her native Edinburgh and the publication of centenary editions of her 22 novels. Cooper & son by Richard Brookhiser
William Cooper was born in 1754 to poor Quaker farmers on the outskirts of Philadelphia, and became a wheelwright. But he was ambitious, marrying a rich farmer’s daughter, and checking books out of the library for edification and self-improvement (he borrowed one volume of the London Magazine five times). By the mid-1780s, he had become a successful storeowner and real estate developer in New Jersey. But he was drawn to the frontier, which then lay in western New York.

A Long Weekend In Amsterdam – Scottish Review of Books
Perhaps you can judge a book by its cover. In this case black-and-white with just a little blue on the front. The lettering for the title and author is unadorned caps. A couple in late middle age, both in overcoats and hats and the woman holding an umbrella against the sleet (the man stands a step or two back from her, and is unprotected), the pair of them isolated on a railed footbridge, with water beneath. The effect (computer edited?) is plain, quite stark. Quite zen.

Catching Up With Joseph Heller – Scottish Review of Books
by Alan Taylor June 6, 2019 | by Alan Taylor Catch-22, the greatest and funniest war novel ever written, has been made into a miniseries by George Clooney. Alan Taylor recalls an unforgettable encounter with its author, Joseph Heller, at his home on Long Island. This article first appeared in the Herald on Sunday. ‘WHERE the hell have you been?’ Joseph Heller sounded tetchy, like a man whose date has turned up a couple of hours late. He had reason to be disgruntled.
For the Good Times – Scottish Review of Books
For the Good Times May 20, 2019 | by Alasdair McKillop ‘FUCKING Glasgow, my friend, it’s just like Belfast, the same rivalries, the same segregated pubs, the same halls, the same murals, the same fucking teams; a friendly city once you get to know it. Plus you’re just as likely to get stabbed for your colours as you are back home, so as you know where you stand as soon as you’re off the boat.’ It’s a familiar idea, the one that Scotland and Northern Ireland are places separated only by water.

Letter: A 'cancer' is plaguing Wapato
To the editor — My family has been part of the Wapato area for over 112 years during which some very positive things have happened. Quality people, a rich agricultural base, and a very successful school district are among those immediately coming to mind. So sad to point out that it continues to be traumatized to its core by a cancer. A malignancy which has somehow found a way to not only violate local and state laws, but to terrorize many of its residents.
ON THE TRAIL OF TROCCHI – Scottish Review of Books
The model for the work was Cain’s Book. Alexander Trocchi’s best-known novel – though it was only barely a novel – was originally published in New York in 1960. When a friend gave it to me to read before my departure, I was electrified. Even the title had something extra, some glow, that the titles of other books didn’t possess. “Cain’s Book”: the book left out of the Bible. The book of the Pariah dog, the un-Chosen.
Cover Stories: Muriel Spark Centenary Editions
The Spark Centenary Editions by Muriel Spark Published by Polygon One author. 22 novels. Where to start. With the author, of course. It’s the one thing that all 22 books have in common. It sounds obvious and it is obvious. As a designer, however it’s important not to ignore what’s right there in front of us. Had I read any of Muriel Spark’s books; no. Thankfully, however, a lot has been written about her, from countless book reviews and interviews, to her 2006 obituary.

Volume 13 Issue 1 Editorial – Scottish Review of Books
Having impetuously agreed to marry a man much older than herself, she set off for what was then known as Rhodesia. She could hardly have made worse choices. The man, Sydney Oswald Spark, turned out to be mentally unstable and potentially violent, while Rhodesia was notable for its male chauvinism, bullish racism and philistinism. All of this, however, as Spark later conceded, was grist to a neophyte writer’s mill.
