Lifesaving treatments should not deplete your life savings
OPINION: The rising cost of health care is a burden felt by all Americans, but perhaps most acutely by those battling life-threatening illnesses such as cancer, who face lengthy and expensive treatments. The stress of exorbitant medical bills on top of a scary diagnosis can be overwhelming. In fact, 42% of cancer patients exhaust their life savings within two years of diagnosis.
No More ‘Dabbling’: It’s Time to Embrace Value-Based Care
Health Policy By ALEX AZAR Presidential transitions are always a time of great change, but few leaders have ushered in a shift as sweeping as the rewiring of one-seventh of the U.S. economy. President Trump has the opportunity to do just that by doubling down on the health transformation achievements of his first term. A key to success is continuing the shift from a fee-for-service (FFS) healthcare model to value-based care (VBC).
Where Can You Find the Best Drinks for a Run?
Depends on its type and expiration date. It's best to buy a reusable one. With the arrival of spring, park paths and stadiums have become more accessible to runners. During and after an active run, your body will need water to ward off dehydration. But what is more suitable for this - a disposable or reusable bottle? Do water containers have an expiration date? What dangers lie in plastic? Let's figure it out. Does the bottle have an expiration date? You can often see an expiration date on the packaging.

US kidney care is broken. But we have the means to fix it. Original
Four years ago, my father passed away from kidney failure after a multi-year battle. When he was first diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), it was toward the end of a long career as an eye surgeon. I had worked in several leadership roles at the U.S. Health and Human Services and at the U.S. affiliate of Eli Lilly. Despite our sophistication in health care, we found that navigating the system and determining our treatment options to be incredibly complex and challenging.
A Living Kidney Donor Saved My Father’s Life - Others Aren’t So Fortunate
When a beloved character in a movie needs a life-saving organ transplant, it almost always magically works out for a happy ending. My father’s story went this way, and I am forever thankful for it. But this is not the case for most Americans currently awaiting an organ transplant. And unless we fix our country’s broken transplant system, it will continue to be the norm.
Azar: The Art of Saying Nothing
If College President Sian Leah Beilock and Dean of the College Scott Brown don’t have anything of substance to say about the recent Supreme Court rulings, they shouldn’t say anything at all. On June 29, two campus-wide emails were sent out by College President Sian Leah Beilock and Dean of the College Scott Brown, in turn. Finally, I would know what the leadership of the College thought about the Supreme Court’s ruling in Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard.
Solving the U.S. Nursing Shortage Crisis Through Immigration Original
The United States is about to learn the hard way what happens when an entire generation of nurses retires without enough new clinicians to fill their shoes at the bedside. As a result, hospitals in the same country that performed the first successful kidney transplant and pioneered anesthesia and heart rhythm restoration will have no choice but to ration care.
Inside the Beltway - February 2023

He is currently a member of the board of directors at Interwell Health.
Industry Voices-Pushing toward a new standard in kidney care
I lost my father almost three years ago to kidney failure. He had experienced the full journey of challenges, from an auto-immune disorder that rapidly destroyed his kidney function, to outpatient dialysis treatment three times a week, then a transition to home dialysis, and finally to receiving a donor kidney, which gave him a high quality of life for another five years.
I was the architect of Operation Warp Speed. The vaccines are safe and they work.
Among the many debatable issues around COVID-19 is one unassailable fact: The coronavirus is nonpartisan. It makes no judgment about one's political leanings. The vaccines that were developed to fight this virus have no political bias, either. And yet the reluctance and even refusal of many Americans - including many of my fellow conservatives and Republicans - to get a COVID-19 vaccine is a frustrating irony for those of us who worked to expedite these vaccines.

As we enter this winter, we face alarming trends in the spread of COVID-19 around the country, but even in this challenging time, we have so much reason for hope. On Friday, the Food and Drug Administration authorized the first COVID-19 vaccine in the United States, and Operation Warp Speed (OWS) and its private sector partners immediately began shipping vaccines to sites designated by states and other public health jurisdictions.
Azar touts mAb COVID-19 therapies but NIH isn’t convinced
Product development By Steve Usdin, Washington Editor Dec 2, 2020 | 10:46 PM GMT The Trump administration sent mixed messages about mAbs for COVID-19 Wednesday as HHS Secretary Alex Azar urged the media to encourage Americans to seek the therapies and an NIH panel said there aren’t enough data to recommend their use. Instead of treating their patients with a mAb that has been authorized by FDA, the panel encouraged physicians to refer their patients to placebo-controlled trials of the therapies.

HHS Secretary Azar: Why Operation Warp Speed is a Made-in-America story
When we launched Operation Warp Speed (OWS), the unprecedented effort to produce and deliver safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines to Americans in record time, skeptics questioned the viability of such an undertaking. The goals we set were optimistic and unprecedented. But it is now highly credible that OWS will have produced up to 100 million doses of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine doses, made in America, by the end of 2020—twelve months from the publishing of the viral sequence.

HHS rules give patients ‘unprecedented’ access to health data
Patients will soon have what HHS called “unprecedented” secure and free access to their health information. Two rules finalized by the HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and CMS — meant to carry out the interoperability and patient access provisions under the 21st Century Cures Act — will allow patients to access their health data using apps so that they can make better health care decisions.

HHS unveils plan to allow states to import drugs from Canada
Today, HHS officials announced that they are seeking public input on two broad strategies that would, for the first time, allow “safe and affordable” prescription drugs to be imported from Canada. In July, President Donald J. Trump had verbally supported several state laws that would allow drugs to be imported from Canada. But those state laws would need the HHS’ approval before the states could begin importing drugs from Canada.

President is providing hope for kidney patients

President puts patients in control
A few years ago, my doctor recommended a routine heart exam. I would be paying for it out-of-pocket since I had a high-deductible plan, so naturally I asked what it would cost. After a great deal of effort, I was told the list price was $5,500 and my insurer’s rate was $3,500. But when I did some more research, I found out the same procedure could be had elsewhere for a tenth of the price.

TV ads will soon start showing drug prices
Drug companies that make prescription pharmaceuticals covered by Medicare or Medicaid must begin including the list price — also known as the Wholesale Acquisition Cost — in their television ads if that price is $35 or more for a month’s supply or the usual course of therapy under a finale rule that HHS Secretary Alex Azar announced today. “This is a very important day for patients in our country,” he said during a conference call with reporters.
