UK Intellectual Property Office To Launch New Financial Support Scheme For SMEs
The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) will be launching a new, tiered financial support pilot scheme for small to medium enterprises (SMEs). This scheme follows the IP Audit scheme which provides funding towards an audit report and the IP Access which was launched in 2021 following the pandemic to help SMEs implement audit recommendations.
EcoCity World Summit 2023: Connecting Communities
In a reflective piece, UK Sustainability and Physics Associate Fergus Anderson discusses the outcomes of the EcoCity World Summit, a diverse conference and exhibition programme held at the Barbican Centre, responding to the theme of Connecting Communities. Like Mikaela, we agree that there is no shortage of intelligence, creativity and will to reimagine the future of cities and neighbourhoods.

Air Quality: The evolution of our concerns and coping strategies
Last week, dystopian Mars-like, yellow-tinged skies engulfed a number of cities across North America as wildfire smoke billowed from Canada. This was a stark reminder of how precious our air is. Despite the US government’s efforts to improve air quality, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5 – <2.5 micrometres in diameter), one of the predominant air pollutants present in smoke, peaked at 303.3μg/m3. This is over 60 times the annual average limit of 5μg/m3 recommended by WHO.
Martyn's Law Briefing
What to expect from the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) ‘Martyn’s Law’ draft bill Briefing. The draft Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Bill sets out the requirements that, under Martyn’s Law, venues and other organisations will have to meet to ensure public safety. ‘Martyn’s Law’ spearheaded by Figen Murray as a tribute to her son Martyn Hett who was killed alongside 21 others in the Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017.
The Power of Our Oceans
As part of an ongoing blog series from our water team, Water Engineer Gabriella Jordan, provides insight into the power of our oceans and how they can change our coastlines. I have always been in awe of the ocean. The joy it can bring people. The life it sustains. The communities it supports. The potential, untapped power it can provide and holds over us.
Buro Happold is celebrating ‘World Day for Health and Safety 2023’
This year’s theme for the International Labor Organisation’s World Day for Health and Safety is: ‘A safe and healthy working environment is a fundamental principle and right at work’. As we continue to live through a global health crisis and face ongoing OSH (Occupational Safety and Health) risks in the world of work, we must continue to move towards building a strong safety and health culture at all levels.
Event Recap - Edinburgh Sustainability Sandbox - What does net zero mean to you?
In an intimate session with some of our clients and collaborators in our Edinburgh office, we asked ‘what does net zero mean to you?’ Drawing on each other’s collective experience navigating the changing sustainability landscape in Scotland, the conversation was facilitated by a talk from Associate Directors Sam Haston and Jeremy Murgatroyd. Edinburgh office director Ian Stewart also chaired the dialogue between the guests.
Water source heat pumps - What are they? What impacts may they have? And can they be used to help reduce carbon emissions?
Developments located adjacent to waterbodies are uniquely placed to make use of the waterbody to accelerate their decarbonisation through a water source heat pump. Reducing carbon emissions has become a key sustainability driver for projects. A water source heat pump can be a great way of making use of the thermal storage capacity of a waterbody to transfer thermal energy to either heat or cool the development.
Event Recap - 2023 Youth Climate Conference Part 2
What will 2030 look and feel like? How will our building stock have changed? What role will biodiversity play in our cities? Has society met its climate ambitions? At this year’s Winter Climate Conference, the many constituent parts of the climate challenge were discussed with over 60 attendees. Attendees were comprised of a variety of backgrounds, across a huge range of specialisms. Focus was placed on widening our views around sustainability, now is the time to be ambitious.
Event Recap: 2023 Youth Climate Conference Part 1
Visualise the climate of 2030, what would progress for the planetary emergency look like? Have greenhouse gases reduced by half? Are emissions, measured in tonnes of CO2 equivalent, net zero? Rarely do we give weight to alternative measurements of climate progress; like our waste management or how much of nature has adapted to the built environment. However, at this year’s Winter Climate Conference, we did exactly that.
LGBTQ history is repeating itself. That’s not necessarily a bad thing
Let’s face it, this year’s Pride comes at a time when many in our community are feeling a sense of doom. The passage of Florida’s so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill this spring was a shock, not to mention the gut punch of the Supreme Court’s likely Roe vs. Wade decision and its deeply concerning implications for our rights and freedoms. So if you’re feeling threatened, there’s good reason — and it’s not just because of what happened in Florida.

The PR potential of the metaverse
Talk to a PR professional about the metaverse and you’re likely to get reactions that range from dismissive to confused — to downright anxious. It’s a concept many are discussing but few seem to truly understand. For communications experts, that’s excusable for now. The metaverse is such a broad, ill-defined concept — infinity is implied in its name.
Straight, White, Cisgender People Are Waking Up to Their Privilege
What the Supreme Court ruling and the public's support for Black Lives Matter show us. June 18 2020 9:30 PM EDT Harvey Milk once famously said, "Rights are won only by those who make their voices heard." Milk’s statement is particularly pertinent given this week’s landmark Supreme Court ruling that Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 applies to discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The Pandemic will Hasten Changes in PR and PR Agencies
Throughout the pandemic, PR has focused on day-to-day issues. That is as it should be; PR pros understand their higher duty is to ensure executives and the companies they represent can successfully navigate challenging circumstances. Still, PR should use this opportunity to think about the future. For PR, COVID-19 will have consequences: There will be a new in-house/agency balance. Brands and companies may focus on building robust in-house capabilities. Outside help will support the in-house team.
Pinkwashing at a crossroads
Pinkwashing is a relatively new phenomenon; it refers to the practice of corporations not living up to their purported promises with regard to LGBT rights. The assumption behind the moniker is some companies claim to be supportive of the LGBT community for purely commercial gain, without a tangible commitment to spurring progress.
Who's Spent the Most on the Midterms? Would You Believe Brands?
Today's midterm elections will be the country's most expensive, with an estimated $5.2 billion spent. The biggest spenders, surprisingly, haven’t been candidates, political action committees or advocacy groups. Instead, corporations have pumped publicity dollars into election-related initiatives, marketing and advertising.
What We Can Learn From Cheerio's Potential PR Crisis
How the cereal brand courted -- and then avoided -- controversy.
The UN Wants American Businesses to End Anti-LGBT Discrimination
Surprise! Being nice to people makes them happier. Double surprise! Being inclusive and encouraging of a diverse workplace makes employees more productive. These are, of course, empirically established facts, so it’s sad that in 2017, in the United States, they even need to be stated. The debate about diversity and inclusion in the workplace should long have been relegated to history books, rather like marching against Nazis.
tmrw: You have to pay attention to Daniel Caesar's album
When we heard Kendall Jenner say Daniel Caesar’s new album was going to be good, we HAD to pay attention. If a placement as next month Apple Music’s ‘Up Next’ artist is anything to go by, it could be believed that Daniel Caesar is on his way to something special. Especially with his cool name. The man is often described as a stripped-down R&B singer, but pure and simple, it’s more blues than rhythm.
tmrw: How to Festival Properly
For most music fans, summer belongs to that one weekend you’ve been hyping about for the past 6 months; that one weekend, where you and your best chums intend on camping in the mud and listening to some absolute bangers. Sounds wicked, is wicked. It definitely can go wrong though, so here’s some pointers to help you lot out this summer.
tmrw: Milky Chance talk humble homes and unbreakable friendship
First of all, I’d like to MILK the fact that I got the CHANCE to meet Milky Chance. It was very enjoyable. As was making that pun… The annual ‘one week of British summer’ decided to fall on the week of which I met up with Clemens Rehbein (rehbein not rayban) and Phillip Dausch from Milky Chance to discuss the wonderful medium of music and why they’re so damn good at it.
tmrw: #Grime4Corbyn: Why It Makes Total Sense
V-day is approaching (vote day, get your heads out the gutter), and there’s no doubt this political season has been an especially unusual one. From the distinct absence of May in debates – or, to be fair, any kind of scenario where she might have to respond to somebody that hasn’t been vetted prior – to the general, messy rush of it all, it’s been weird for sure.
tmrw: Declan Mckenna really does care about the important stuff
Imagine being just months away from your first fully produced album, at just 18. Imagine being too young to vote against Brexit, but still having more political intelligence than most. Imagine being 18 and hearing your own song on FIFA. These aren’t alternative lyrics to a certain John Lennon song; these are the realities of Declan McKenna.
Lessons from Cheerios’ near-PR crisis | Articles | Home
By now, you might have read about (or seen) the Honey Nut Cheerios campaign to save the honey bee -- a clever marketing stunt that recently burst into the spotlight, although likely not in the way General Mills, the parent company, would have hoped Quick recap for those who don’t have a thumb to the beat of the cereal industry: amidst its seventh straight quarterly decline in sales, and in an attempt to raise awareness of the honeybee’s critical role as a pollinator of many of the world’s...

tmrw: Grime: A Team Sport
Time and time, grime has been referred to as a ‘movement’, dictionary defined as ‘a group of people working together to advance their shared political, social, or artistic ideas’, a definition perfectly representative of grime. Just two weeks ago, The Guardian released a 3 page spread on Wiley, ‘The Godfather of Grime’, telling stories of how he paid out for production time for artists, knowing he’d stand to make no gain from it.
tmrw: The Year of Scarlett Johansson: Changing Tides In Film
At the end of December, Scarlett Johansson was named as the highest grossing actor of 2016, meaning perhaps she doesn’t feel as badly about the year as the rest of us do. So, how do you become the world’s highest grossing actor in a year? Answer: Captain America: Civil War (mostly). The Marvel franchise is one that attracts the eyes and ears of millions, it’s discussed heavily across the globe, and always, always, grosses highly. This year would be no exception to this rule.
tmrw: An Oscar for Ryan Gosling? It would be about time
ryan gosling, the boys an oscar favourite; finally. (no, half nelson doesn’t count, he didn’t win it did he?) to quote a fellow tmrw writer niall flynn “write what you like”, and i like ryan gosling. for too long gosling has been grafting to build something more than a pretty boy image. in his tenor on the big screen he’s rolled through the rolls, bad boy, drunkard, disturbed, drug addict, investment banker (in order of which I’d rather be).
Swimming Through Crisis: The Stats Behind Lochte's Apology by @alexpmslater
We're searching for top company cultures to be featured on our annual list. Think your company has what it takes? Apply Now » By all accounts -- and there were many -- Ryan Lochte has provided the most peculiar story of the 2016 Olympic games. The 12-time Olympic medalist found himself in hot water after Fox Sports reporter Ben Way happened upon Lochte's mother while sharing a ride on an Olympic shuttle bus, where she let slip that her son had been “held up at gunpoint” the previous evening.
Strategically Discussing Strategy
Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Before the 1960s the word “strategy” was rarely uttered in business, reserved more for discussions about diplomacy and the battlefield than the boardroom. Today, of course, the word strategy is ubiquitous in business, particularly in professional services. "Entrepreneur" publishes pieces suggesting or encouraging choices -- strategy -- every day.
Do You Know How to Create an Employment Brand?
As with any brand, an employer brand is very much about perception. It is the image you project to current and prospective employees, and also how customers and the general public view you as an employer. Your employer brand is more than the wages and benefits you offer. It represents the values of your company and the quality of the product or service you intend to provide.
