At some point, most suburban American firefighters find themselves having an identity crisis. Attending their first fire academy brings drills of flowing water, diving into smoke filled rooms and breaking things with axes. Among all of this is an ongoing excitement for the skills they learn to perform. They are hooked, and they start watching videos of fires and reading articles. Next, they go all-in on the T-shirts and get tattoos. They love the fire service and they love being a firefighter.

He’s usually telling you about his beliefs with a sense of righteousness. He repeats his mistakes. He is the Angry Young Fireman. In 1979, Billy Joel released the song “Prelude/Angry Young Man.” The song follows a prideful and cynical young man with the contrast of a mature perspective.
