Abstract Background: Olfactory dysfunction (OD) is common in COVID-19 and in a small percentage of patients it can become persistent, substantially impacting on quality of life. Effective treatment options for persistent COVID-19-related OD (C19OD) remain limited. Functional septorhinoplasty (fSRP) can improve olfaction in persistent C19OD by increasing nasal airflow to the olfactory cleft and improving olfactory epithelium (OE) stimulation.

1 Introduction The relationship between nasal airflow and olfaction is complex. The detection of olfactory stimuli intrinsically depends on the delivery of odorants to the olfactory epithelium (OE), an area located at the apex of the nasal cavity at the level of the cribriform plate. It has been reported that the airflow reaching the olfactory area during a normal resting breath accounts for only 5% to 15% of the total nasal flow [1-3].
