Alice Jones Webb is a writer, long-time hunter, experienced shooter, and mother of 4 up-and-coming outdoor enthusiasts. She grew up flinging bullets and broadheads at Virginia whitetails, turkey, and game birds, but her favorite hunting experience is chasing bull elk in the Colorado back country. She is also a self-defense instructor and competitive archer. Alice currently resides in rural North Carolina with her children, non-hunting husband, and a well-stocked chest freezer.

Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay, I never realized seafood dinners could be considered fancy. I didn’t know that people paid good money for lump crab meat with melted butter. To me, a crab feast meant wet hands, the smell of salt marsh mud, and an afternoon baking in the hot summer sun. I was barely old enough to ride a bicycle, but I knew I could catch enough blue crabs to steam them up for supper with nothing more than a chicken leg, a length of line, a dip net, and a good helping of patience.

Montana’s Hunting District 380 is one of the most difficult units to draw a bull elk tag. The success rate in 2023 was well under one percent. According to court records, multiple people bypassed the draw system entirely, illegally killing multiple bulls as well as several deer over a two-month period that ended in multiple convictions.

But prosecutors say nearly 40 hunters who thought they were booking the adventure of a lifetime lost almost $60,000 to an illegal guiding scheme that left some of them stranded in rural Alaska.
